I used to work for a Bank, many years ago. When they first started opening on a Saturday they paid staff overtime for it but then decided that pittance was eating into their obscene profits too much.
So they annualised staff hours; staff got nothing extra for working a Saturday, Bank Holiday (as was) late evenings or even overnight shifts (in the International or Clearing Departments for instance).
It's amazing really. When the suns about many people seem to whine over how hot it is. Then when America goes and steals the sun from us many of the Brits just whine over how cold it is and how they wish the sun were here.
Guess you really can't please everyone. It's mostly impossible.
