Top Ten Tips!

Below are the top ten tips provided by our clan leaders. They cover all areas of clan administration and will help you gain an advantage and avoid pitfalls as your clan grows.

Tip 1: Communication!

It is one of the most important things to keep in mind when running a clan. Make sure you regularly catch up with your Admin team, and don't make big decisions without discussing it with those involved first. Be approachable; encourage your Admins and clanmates to speak up if something is bothering them. As the leader of a clan, your members need to know they can come to you, or a co-leader, with any clan related issues, comments, or suggestions.

Proper communication prevents a wide range of disputes, particularly within your Admin team.

Tip 2: Keep your Clan Chat Friendly

If the CC has a friendly, active, and open atmosphere, this will spread around in-game and more players will want to join.

Tip 3: Be Confident in Yourself

Always remember why you founded your clan, and never stop working towards achieving your goals just because you run into some obstacles. Maintain a strong appearance in the presence of your members, and don't let a troublesome member faze you. Keeping a level head will help you deal with a lot of issues, whether minor or complex. Keep your Admin team informed of any issues, and work together for solutions. Having a successful clan involves a lot of work; don't try to do it by yourself.

Tip 4: Start Small, but Build a Strong Foundation

Focus more on the quality of your members rather than the quantity of members in your clan.

Tip 5: Don’t Be Too Strict

Give your members freedom, and enlist the help of those that show an interest in contributing in a positive way. Allow clan members to run their own events. ~ Sicariu

Tip 6: Be Unique

Have something about your clan to make it stand out from other clans; unique clans stand out and attract more members.

Tip 7: Be Professional When Recruiting

Create a professional, well-worded recruitment thread to attract players looking for a clan.

Tip 8: Be Trustworthy

If you make a mistake, own up to it. Your members will respect you more than if you try to hide something or don't accept responsibility for questionable actions.

Tip 9: Be Open To Suggestions

Avoid running your clan purely by your own beliefs; this will make you lose members. Take ideas from your clan members and use them to shape your clan. Be flexible. A clan of any size will have members from all walks of life, ages, personalities, and opinions. People working together can make the clan better for everyone. Make important decisions based on an outcome that will be best for the clan as a whole.

For a clan to function without chaos, rules are a necessity. Your clan’s rules, how ranks are determined, and the responsibilities of your Admin team and members should be clear and easy to understand. Keep it simple. ~ Sicariu

How to Recruit Effectively:

Once you’ve determined the purpose for your clan, you will need to start recruiting. Here are a few pointers that may help on your way to creating your perfect clan.

Recruiting - The Basics

• Show as many advantages to being in your clan in as short a time as possible.
• Provide both long and short term benefits of joining.

Methods of Recruitment

• Wander about as a clan advertising to players you find.
• Place your Clan Vexillum in a crowded area and to advertise your clan.
• Talk to random strangers, whilst skilling, training, killing monsters, and ask if they are in a clan and if they'd like to join one.
• Use the recruitment forums; they are your best friends, so don't be afraid to use them!
• Take part in large events, such as JMod hosted events, which will get your clan noticed.
• Invite your friends, and get your friends to invite their friends.

Things to Avoid

• Don't be pushy.
• Don't just recruit any and everyone; you need to find players who will fit into the clan.
• Don't offer only long term or only short term incentives.
• Don’t pay players to join your clan.
• Don't let things which will show you up appear (misbehaving).
• When posting invites in the Looking for a Clan forum, try to read what people are looking for in a clan before posting. Make a personalized invitation post, rather than copy & paste the same invitation each time. Players are more likely to feel like you’re interested in them and not just increasing your clan size by personalizing your invitation to them.

How to Keep Your Members Engaged

Once you have found some members to join your merry rabble, you will need to find ways to keep them engaged with the clan. Below is some advice that can help with this!

Member Engagement - The Basics

• Hold regular events.
• Make sure the clan chat is active, and encourage members to join in.
• Allow members to ask questions and raise queries about the clan.

Methods of Engagement

• Group events with your clan
• Fun Challenges, such as most xp in a time period
• Clan vs Clan events
• Friendly Competitions, such as quizzes and video clips
• Hold meetings to get members interested in what’s happening in the clan and get input and interest from them.
• Involve your members in the decisions and direction of the clan. This will increase member involvement and responsibility. In this way, you can also recruit the best staff members.

Things to Avoid

• Excluding people from events
• Too many or too few things going on in a time period

General Tips

• Use a range of different methods to engage your members rather than the same ones over and over.
• Listen to suggestions from your members.
• Be open to trying new things.
• Provide awards to those who attend events, such as ranking people up who participate, are active, and friendly. ~ Sicariu

Clan Administration

So, you have members and event ideas, now you need to sort out who is going to help you run the clan.

Admin Responsibilities - The Basics

• Share out responsibility, and don't do everything yourself. Aim to maintain order.
• Admin ranked members should be around to help you maintain order, spread recent clan changes to members, and help newer clan members.

Selecting Admins - Tips

• Choose people who are active, well liked/known within the clan, and are generally helpful.

Things to Avoid

• Don't decide ranks or give special treatment because someone is a friend. A good friend doesn't mean they are a good clan member or leader.
• Don't be too strict or too lenient.
• Don't be biased. A leader should be impartial in all cases.
• Don’t abuse your privileges as a leader. You might be the top person, but in the end, you rely on your members.
• If a member wishes to leave, let them. The last thing you want is drama and encouraging "childish behaviour" to get what they want. If you give one what they want, others will be pointing at that.

How to Deal with Clan Issues

Occasionally, issues may occur within the clan, such as a fight between members, a lone disruptive player, or issues with another clan.

Dealing with Clan Issues - The Basics

• Sort them out as soon as possible. Don’t let issues linger for too long, or they will most certainly get worse!
• Hold authority. Don’t let disruptive players bring you down to their level. Solve the problem as a leader, and don’t become part of the problem yourself.
• Make sure issues don't repeat.
• Follow the clan’s rules, and set an example for others to follow. Just because you set and enforce the rules doesn’t mean you’re above the rules.
• Remain impartial; don't take sides in a dispute.

Methods to Settle Issues

• Speak carefully with those involved.
• Decide how you want the clan to be and what rules you are going to have
• Try getting the main people who have conflicts into a separate chat. Get them to talk to each other to give their point of view, and you (as the leader) should mediate and ensure that no one interrupts or blatantly 'trolls' others.
• Listen to all sides of the story. Check up on their stories, and look for evidence/witnesses.
• Consult with your Admins or Staff on what to do, and ask them for advice. Making an informed group decision will often work out better than trying to solve a problem on your own.

Things to Avoid

• Don’t cause more problems
• Don’t jump in too early if there is no issue present. Often times, issues will work themselves out without needing to intervene. Be sure that it’s necessary to take action before you do.

• Forgiveness - Learn to forgive and forget. However, don't give too many chances. If a member is disruptive and breaking clan rules, make a point that there will be consequences for bad behaviour. ~ Sicariu

Clan Diplomacy

You can't run a clan in RuneScape without having some interaction with other clans, either rivals or allies. Below are tips on how to avoid all our war, or how to organise wars if that’s what you're interested in!

Clan Diplomacy - The Basics

• Join a union. Not all of them are out there to seize control of your clan’s assets. Join one, meet new clans, attend events, and create bonds with other clans.
• Try joining ladders. These will create healthy competition between you and other clans, along with you and your clan getting to know other clans and increase your experience with other clans.

Methods of Diplomacy/Warfare

• Talk to leaders in-game to get to know them and set up events. It creates a more personal touch with the clans you wish to interact with.

Things to Avoid

• Getting into arguments or conflicts with other clans. Some clans can be powerful and large and can result in unpleasant scenarios. ~ Sicariu

Clan Recruitment Thread Advice

Creating a recruitment thread on the RuneScape forums is a great way to advertise your clan to potential recruits. Follow this advice to create the best recruitment thread for your clan.

1. Each clan is permitted to have only one recruitment thread, so

choose the recruitment section that best suits your clan

:

• Under 100 Combat : For clans that have a combat level requirement below 100
• 100 Combat and Over : For clans that have a combat level requirement of 100+
• Skilling Clans : For clans that focus on skilling or have skilling level requirements
• Social & Community Clans : For clans that mainly socialize and have no requirements to join
• Specialist, Questing, & Minigames : For clans that focus on Questing, Minigames, or do not fit into the other four categories
• For clans based in OSRS, use the Old School Clans section

2.

Decide who will be the author of your clan’s recruitment thread

. Forum posts cannot be edited by other players, so you’ll want someone who can reliably manage the thread if posts need to be edited in the future.

3.

Choose an appropriate thread title

. Forum thread titles have a limit of 30 characters, so try to be concise and descriptive. Rather than titling your thread “Recruiting for my clan!”, include your clan’s name (or an abbreviation) and an important aspect of the clan, such as a major requirement that must be met to join. For example, a clan with a 100+ combat level requirement may title their thread, “Clan RS - 100+ Combat.” Also, players are unable to edit thread titles, so you must make a title change request on Forum Help if needed. ~ Sicariu

4.

Create a unique recruitment thread

. Copying and plagiarizing another clan’s recruitment thread will cause your thread to get locked. A unique recruitment thread will help your clan stand out from the others on the forums.

5.

Be descriptive and format your posts

. You don’t want to overwhelm players with walls of text as they will most likely not read it. Include descriptive posts about your clan that are formatted for better readability to allow players who may be interested in joining your clan to get all of the information they’re looking for. Including a table of contents can help players navigate your thread more easily.

It’s a good idea to use more than one post for a recruitment thread to include information about your clan. This allows you to advertise various aspects of your clan, such as requirements, rules, stats, a list of your Admin team, types of events your clan enjoys, etc. If you think you might include more information at a later time, be sure to create reserve posts to save the space.

6.

Bump your thread to keep it relevant

. As new posts are made and new threads are created, your recruitment thread will be bumped farther down the page, making it more difficult for other players to find. All you need to do is click the ‘bump’ button (if you’re the thread author), or make a post on the thread, and it will be moved back to the first slot on page one of the forum section your thread is in. As per the Forum Rules, bumping is limited to every 10 minutes, so do not bump your thread more frequently than this. Just keeping the thread on the first page will keep your clan’s thread relevant.

7.

Respond to posts that other players make on your thread

. Acknowledging these posts will show that your clan is actively checking the thread. If no posts are responded to, it may turn away players who get the impression that your clan either does not check the thread or is no longer active. ~ Sicariu
