Hi. Very well written guide. I will direct people here next time they ask me about how the GE works.
I do have a couple of points of information.
Recently Jagex seems to have been selling rares from banned accounts back into the GE. After the cash duping incident they said that all the rares that had been bought would not be removed from the game. This seems to be the way they have decided to reintroduce them. (Post #1)
(Post #3) Offers which have exactly the same price take turns. Using your example with two people each selling 100 rune 2h at 36kea - if 10 people each buy 1 sword, each seller will have sold 5 swords. If one person buys 1 (from the older offer), then another person buys 2 (from the new offer), and then 197 people buy one each, the newer offer will complete before the older one.
Offers also overflow into each other. If the older offer is selling 8 swords, and the newer offer is selling 3 swords, and someone buys 10, the old offer will complete and the remaining 2 will come from the newer one.
(Post #7) I think it is possibly slightly misleading to say that the GE updates randomly every 20-28 hours. The GE updates once per day, according to British time (GMT/BST). I haven't followed this lately, but the GE generally updated no earlier than 4am, and no later than 11pm. Within those times it appeared to be random, though I remember some people claimed to have cracked the algorithm.
Because most people live in different time zones, it appears to many that the GE updates twice in one day and not at all the next day. In theory the gap between two updates could be as much as 43 hours, and as little as 5 hours, but on average it will be 24 hours. (This doesn't include mini-updates - but I don't know if Jagex even does those anymore.)
