Try using confuse or another spell to keep agro, that should work just fine.

Not in Shades of Mort'ton I'm afraid. It seems that the Loar Shades do not retaliate at all unless being actually dealt any damage, and when aggressive they lose interest after 2 misses/blocked attacks. Bolas seem to be the exception, they become aggressive and stay that way as long as you keep throwing it at them. But like I said, I'm unable to verify whether bolas + recoil will actually count as a kill for the quest.

those bolas are safe for pvm situations and count for targeting... but don't use them in pvp situations as they do damage against normal players and can cause you to get xp. just thought I'd mention that :)

bolas + recoil should be enough.

for some reason in one small favour, curses wouldn't count for the kills on the 3 dwarfs... neither would tfk or ftk. but i tried out bolas instead and the kills counted.
idk but they come in handy at times lol
Fear the almighty Woo Lord ...

Ah, so bolas+recoil works on both the dwarves and Slagilith, meaning OSF can be completed with no hp xp?

Annoying range level requirement, though... Are there any good ways to train ranged except for the ranging guild minigame and the circus?

Unfortunately I have to confirm this. I also had that Ozan didn't hit his bandits either, which would force you to kill all 6 of them. (Apep and Heru at the end hit fine, on the other hand)

Did you complete this quest by killing them normally?
Also does anyone know how to complete it without killing them normally, really want to do this quest!

I did, yes, as it was only a test account. I don't think there's a way to do it xp-free until jagex decides to buff the bosses again.

EDIT: Also, some random thoughts:
For Family Crest, has anyone tried if hitting a 0 with a blast spell on chronozon works, in Legacy Mode? I believe that pre-EOC the blast would not "count" if the spell splashed, however it would if it just hit a 0.

As for recoiling, the deathtouched bracelet seems promising, but what about the Noxious weaponry? It's expensive as hell and requires level 90 in the corresponding combat skill, but the special seems to do recoil damage... Perhaps worth investigating, if possible?

EDIT2: Did some more Shades of Mort'ton testing. To get the kill to count for 5 needed in the quest, you need to both have tagged it and deal the final blow. Since they don't counterattack on curse/blocked hits, I'd bolas+recoil is the best bet to make this work.

However, there seems to be a (possible) alternate way, which I unfortunately can't try out since I've got my 5 kills already now. On w88, where people do the temple building minigame, the shades attacking the temple seem to have different behaviour. They do counterattack when you hit a 0 on them. However, after a hit or 5, they will start ignoring you again and go back to attacking the temple. Perhaps, if you would be somehow able to attack them, have a friend hit them down to 20-ish lp within a few seconds, and then you recoil the last bits off, then MAYBE that would work.

Kind of sucks that it can't be done anymore =/
I wonder why it was even "fixed" in the first place.

I contacted Jagex about it and this was their response.

Hey * Rawra,

Thanks for getting in touch with us with your query.

We put months of work into all the awesome content that goes into the game, and as much as possible we want to make all skills relevant and enjoyable.

Though there are some who chose to challenge themselves by playing a pure character, sometimes this simply goes against the design of the game (it's like choosing not to use a gun in an first person shooter).

We respect the pure community, and as best we can, provide a game that they can enjoy without risking their stats - however sometimes there will simply be content that isn't passable for pures.

I hope this make sense, please feel free to get in touch again if you have further questions.

Say... does anyone know some more details about the "pure reset"? Because the way it's formulated, it sounds rather exploitable (for 10hp pures) right now. It's only mentioned that quests 'requiring' levels will be reset... however, it doesn't mention rewards or xp gained during the quests, so...

An idea i've been toying with is starting a new account, and doing as many quests as possible while keeping attack, strength, ranged and magic below level 6, fighting only in a defensive style as to only gain constitution, defence and prayer levels.
Once resets are released, you could (if necessary) train attack, strength, ranged and magic so that their total is at least 10, then apply the defence reset, followed by the constitution & prayer reset.
