A common misconception is that the bumps on the tongue are taste buds. They are actually termed papillae and are projections of the epithelial layer by the lamina propria layer. Taste buds are correctly found in the cleft/crypts found adjacent to fungiform and circumvallate papillae.

Next time at the dentist if you have a problem with a particular surface of your tooth you can refer to these terms to sound smart.

Occusal surface - Surface of tooth in contact with the opposite tooth.
Labial surface - Surface closest to the lips (the surface most people see visually)
Buccal surface - Surface closest the cheek
Lingual surface - Surface closest the tongue
Dental Arcade - Dental Row ( Arcade means the row of teeth)

E.g Hey doc I have a cavity on my right pre-molar on the lower dental arcade at the lingual surface.
