What is your take on magic in dungeoneering?

From my experiences from 62 to 80 are a bit mix.

I have mixed views on magic's 'power' down there. I do not believe that Fire surge + celestial staff = primal weapons and believed magic got overlooked in the weapons area. Although overall offensive power was not the problem I had while attempting to use magic, it was defense. At 99 magic and 90 defense + usually some ecto robes my magic resistant felt nonexistent... I still got hit extremely high and often by magical based attacks yet in melee it seemed that 'equivalent' leveled monsters hit far less.

To me it thinks magic's problem is more along its 'unique'[?] place in the triangle

Look at melee

Melee is weak against magic, despite this weakness its magic penalty is in the low negatives (never higher then -20 if i recall). That doesn't really matter since melee is 'weak' against magic.

However its melee defensive stats are extremely high, with prom greater then 300s as well as its range stats getting that high.

Look at magic, even the class it is 'strong against' [melee] it has rather weak defensive stats. Even in the unlikely [?] full celestial, its only around 110 for melee protection, even magic defense seems to be around 100. range is 0.

So magic seems to be in a very unique spot here, it has pitifully defensive bonus against the class its 'stronger' against as well as itself. This means magic takes far more damage from 3 sides of the triangle then melee who normally takes more from 1 (constant damage that is).

Defensive in dugeonnering seems unlikely, I have been piled countless times. while far casting, i tend to be overcome very fast (even with prayer), melee has allowed me to have multiple enemies on me yet suffer little.

For the longest time I thought magic needed ancients down there, but it seems they need defense, any comments on my rambling?
