We had a sole leader whose words and actions were the final word. Was it healthy for the Clan? Many left and fell by the wayside but the Clan flourished. Gradually I went somehow from me guarding his back and pulling on the reigns trying to keep a balance to in theory joint leader.

Now we are back to a solo leader, my words and actions are law. 98% of the time the Clan runs its self and is its own master. The other 2% even if I try and consult my thoughts and actions are agreed with. Is it healthy for the Clan - it seems to be working. Is it healthy for me - definitely not.

It comes down to the nature of the clan and the qualities of the people who run it. A small clan that is run only in-game doesn't require as much leadership as a big clan that extends to off-site and real life. We try to keep a balanced team and we currently have 4 owners. I was fine leading my previous clan on my own (below 100 players and we basically just chatted in the CC), but I could never do that now. Qualities aside, there simply wouldn't be time to do everything and take every decision

One clan I ran had 3 equal leaders. The idea was we were each a different timezone (I was uk, one was US and one was Australia). Personally I don't think this worked as if we wanted advice from another leader, chances are we'd only ever get 2 of us on at the same time which meant either no decision or we both had the same thought... which normally we'd know and wouldn't need to have more than one leader on. If it is divided up I do think 5 is a good number as it means an odd number and it's not too many to get everyone online together and it's not too few that if people aren't there, things can't be done.

Another thing is splitting leaders across timezones isn't good, you only really need deputies/advisors on at other timezones to report what happens during the hours you're not there. Leadership decisions rarely need to be made at the time of the event.

As others have said, I think one leader is best, but a lot does rely on that individual's activity. Should the leader be away, the clan is likely to become less active, since a lot would depend upon them to make decisions. However, when they are there, decisions are made more quickly and there is less division on how things are handled, meaning a quicker response and less arguments because the majority are willing to leave it to the leader to decide.

But as Archaeox / Gluepot pointed out, listening to and gathering information from members of the clan is very useful. I personally have small regular(ish) meetings with high ranks and general (not so regular) clan meetings on larger issues. I usually leave smaller topics or the first proposal of clan changes to high rank meetings and then bringing it up in a clan wide meeting should it warrant further discussion or more input.

We have a council (organisers+) that takes part in every decision we do; new admins, creating events, decidin clan requirements etc. Its a small group of people compared to our clan size, but it seem to be working very well. We also have a clan meeting every two weeks to make plans/ discuss things that has happened.

Me and the other two key ranks decides who we want to rank up to organiser.

Thank you everyone for your input. I suddenly feel a lot less guilty about holding all the power in my clan as I always have.

Its good to know that so many other clans also have a single leader who make majority of decisions and have close friends to just advise them and pitch in.

Thanks again.

My clan has its own council which determines most of the functions of the clan. Though I am the "Owner," I rarely make executive decisions without consulting them.

It is not uncommon for me to be outvoted on a decision and I implement their decision.

My council is 5 members (at the moment), being approximately 10% of the clan. I feel this is a nice balance.

I do have, in the clan charter, the ability to override any vote but nothing has come up that i am so passionate about that I will veto. Similarly, my second-in-command, has similar veto powers. But all-in-all, we are just votes in the decision.

I think it works.
