My two cents on prestige, after giving it some more thought.
I am level 97 in rc and agility, 98 fishing. If I can get 99 in those 3 skills before prestige launches, I can "prestige" them (or is that nuts - I hate these 3 skills) and potentially vault up the high scores ahead of some who have been 99 a long time. So that has some (minor) interest for me, as I do look at high scores and rank from time to time and these skills could be very well positioned.
Having said that, I really don't like the idea of someone who "prestiges" defense and reaches level 50 with 14 million total XP or so being ranked ahead of my 50 million xp in defense. Yet, I understand that giving me credit for prestige 1 for the first 13 million, prestige 2 for the next 26 million, and 10 million xp towards prestige 3 is "not fair" because I didn't have to start over at level 1 to get that extra xp.
In a vacuum, with all players starting at square one under a prestige system, I think players would be generally in favor. However, the concept did not exist on day 1. I am sure the folks at Jagex follow other games and have seen the positive (and negative) impacts on those games of introducing prestige. If it is a good update (and I really hope they learn from others and get this as right as possible) that can't be properly retro'd to day 1, then it should be implemented. There will be, inevitably, unfairness as a result of the transition, but the alternative is not to introduce something that may be of value to the game.
So, I say bring it on, but get it right! As right as it can be, given the inherent issues with any transition. The alternative is no new content as every significant new addition to the game helps some players more than others. And, if they keep the existing high scores, then those who are vehemently opposed to prestige can largely ignore it.
