Ugh happened to in my clan in the last couple of days, the attempt seems to have failed though, thankfully. Someone was pretending to be me, they were using a different spelling error to i/l thing though. Seriously NOT COOL...

It has happened to my clan frequently in the past 3 months, with myself, my deputy owner and other high ranks being impersonated. Sadly one clan member fell for it and lost 200m. It seems to happen very frequently while the unknown guest is still in the cc, and as soon as people ask about it in the cc the guest will leave and the impostor account will appear offline right after.

Only thing I can say is warn, warn and warn. Tell people to add the higher ups, and if they get a pm from someone not added, then it's not someone in the clan staff. I realise it's hard for Jagex to do something about it, but if possible try to find the people responsible. Not just the bogus accounts themselves, those are not of any interest. Some of those added to the clan ban list haven't even changed their names yet. I'm talking about mains benefiting from this scam being banned.

Something interesting happened with this in my clan today.

I logged in and was informed by a few people that an imposter who had last been spotted by us in April was back pming people for money.

But this time, we noticed something different. One person who was pmed asked in the CC, "[name withheld] did you pm me?" to which the imposter responded "Yes" in PM.

No suspicious guests were in our CC at the time, so we're under the impression that someone in our clan is responsible for this because they had to have seen this question in our CC.

I don't want to turn this into witchhunt, but I resorted to making a list of clan members who joined our clan prior to April 8th (who joined our clan before the last reported incident) who are now potential suspects.

Just a fair warning to fellow clans that these imposter accounts may be controlled members of your own clans.

In addition to informing your clanmates whats going on, I would also recommend greeting and kicking unresponsive guests as a preventative measure. We've been doing this for a long time in an effort to limit access to those that would try to attempt these sorts of scams and its fairly effective.

I also agree that I would like to see these accounts tracked and action taken against their mains. From the comments posted in CLF it appears to be a relatively small group of people hoping from clan to clan attempting this.

This appears wide spread and enough of the accounts have been reported ingame or stated on the forums to justify an investigation by Jagex on this matter.

Yea, again, My name has been used... ofc little things changed. As owner of my clan , my clanmates would probably help me more than the average player if i asked. But the person pmd a lot of people in my clan with 2 diff similiar names. Luckily, I had warned my clanmates about this scam.

2 of my deputy owners, also had same issue.

Seems like they just target high ranking clan members like admin and above thinking that people will trust them more to pay back or something.

But my deputy owner contacted me in middle of the night she was so upset.

One thing i do not understand, I took one of the names, made a char logged in but did not go thru totorial. Since the name wipe thing. But this person had it. Would not doing the totorial be reason or did they randomly find that email and change it or how? I could not even find the email for it so its not like i cared. I just did that to keep that one name from being used. But oh well it was as i recieved a screen shot of it.

But please tell all friends and clan mates about this type scam.

This happened in my clan recently. The person changed the letters in a coordinators name to ask for a "loan". They scammed my clan member for 500m because he trusted this coordinator. They always target the high ranks because people trust them.

Because of a problem with another clan and harassment, we already kick unresponsive accounts and each guest who enters, we check their stats. The scammers are always brand new accounts.

That stinks, only other advice I have to give your clan is to remind members in multiple timezones about this scam. Idk if your clan has rules against trust trades like we do, but we use these announcements as a way to both inform people that there are fake accounts trying this, but also to remind people of our rules against trust trading / lends. Just keep dealing with guests and try to inform as much of your clan as possible, sadly that is our best defense against this issue currently.
