Hey, we have been having plenty of discussions about how we want to improve the way we recruit new members to the clan. We are a young clan.

One thing we are struggling with how to convey age requirements or age preference.
The majority of our clan members are adult players, they were 9-15 way back when, and are returning. So they seem to be 23-27 years old.

We tend to have conversations that are more mature and we joke around with a lot of innuendos. We are a "Rainbow Clan." To us that means we are open to everyone, but we want to try to dissuade younger players from joining our clan.

I am a professional. I work in schools, with children. Most of my clan mates know this. I would not want to be accused of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, by making a joke in clan chat, or by talking on clan chat or discord about an adult subject.

Is it against any rules to state that anyone under 18 should not apply to our clan? Can we put in the clan rules, stating an age requirement for the clan? Or, can we just make a note about discussion topics that may not being acceptable for younger players?

We don't ask peoples age but when I'm recruiting, I will mention that we are a mature clan, and say our average age ( approx 25), that in itself seems to be enough to dissuade younger players from joining. While we don't have an age requirement, but advise that we expect maturity from everyone . However we probably don't have the jokes/innuendos you have so the odd younger player joining wouldn't be so much of an issue for us.

I've seen lots of clans recruiting and saying they are 18+ only so I don't see why you cant use that as a requirement, at the end of the day, you will have to take it on trust that anyone is as old as they say they are.

Hey Zeldafield

I also ran a clan that had an age requirement. As it is not possible to ask people their age, what Kera said is a very good approach. Maybe also utilize the link on the vex if you haven't yet? I would always check that potential recruits had read the forum that the vex links to.

I found that even doing that there are times when it goes wrong, and many of the people (younger or not so young) who did join my clan would say maturity is not strongly linked to chronological age, age is a just a number, maturity is a choice. I had a 40+ yr old that was amazingly prudish, she had to be kicked eventually because she was enforcing her own strict standard that went against clan rules/guidelines. Our clan motto is "Kinky as a cheap garden hose" so you can imagine how super strictness went over with everyone.

"Aging is a natural process, maturity is not connected with age. A person can be called a mature person , when s/he is aware of their strengths, weaknesses and needs. Maturity is something connected with self consciousness."

A heard a rumor years ago that clans were not allowed to enact real-world requirements. The logic behind it had been to reduce the number of "Klans" (Clans that don't allow ethic minorities to join, for example) from potentially popping up. I believe there was also a clan that was told by a forum moderator they had to change their requirements because they only allowed people to join if they had served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Disclaimer - these are rumors, I have no confirmation one way or another

That said, I'm not really sure how age would factor into something like this. It really could go either way - kicking someone for being under 13 could be age discrimination, or it could be following Jagex's T&C's. Likewise, adult content sites tell their users they must be 18+ to view the site, but is that discrimination, or protecting minors?

Age requirements really are a huge gray-area that could go either way, so I think clarification is needed on it.

You are absolutely correct - certainly on the forums, clans are not permitted to use real-world criteria (e.g. ethnicity, gender, age) as bars to recruitment, as this would be discriminatory.

From the Forum Specific Rules of the 100+ combat recruitment forum, for example:
""
I don't like tall people! Can I specify that I only want short people to apply to join my clan?
No, you can't specify any real life beliefs or characteristics as a requirement to join your clan.
""

I think the answer to the OP's question is simply to do what we do in the Caped Carousers - have your description highlight the fact that you are a mature clan, even though you are made up of people of all ages. You could certainly make clear that, while open to all, you expect a degree of maturity and an ability to discuss adult and real-world issues from your members; that should put off a lot of the kids.

On the same subject, I am now getting PMs (Phishing) about apps someone is making to determine age of players.. I reported them. Not sure how a respected clan would contact me in pm about an out of game app... just saying.

Actually I am not phishing

ClanTools is actually in development

edit:

Just to provide some clarification, I pm'ed Zelda mentioning I was working on a specific tool specifically for recruiting and finding clans that would use algorithms to determine what type of player you are and return a list of clans that they would be eligible to join. as per my legal requirement, I would be required under law to gather the age of the user in case that user is under the children's online privacy protection act or any other legal legislation that requires protection to the user. But Zelda also made me realise that as I had the age of the user I could technically implement an Age Filter category so any clans only wanting to say take 16 to 25 year olds could theoretically exclude themselves on appearing on the list of eligible clans.

Also here are some of the " out of game " apps you may use on a regular basis, just cause they are out of game doesn't mean you can't trust the developers:
Maxcape.com
Runescape.wikia.com
Runeclan
Branjos' Clan bot (if you use discord)
Reddit.com/r/runescape
Various fansites such as (tip.it, runehq) etc...
Creator of the Clan Leader Discord & Clan Discord
Lead Developer of The Clan Network
Clan Leader of Bound Links

This is my way of seeing it. You are playing as your character and not as you in the real world. In turn, the age is not applicable. There is no way to enforce and age requirement, however the social setting your clan members set in your clan also deters people from outside the maturity of that social setting from taking part.
