Hello all! With today's update, Jagex has put out some major
Mining and Smithing Changes
. These changes were detailed in their Dev Blog on Stone Spirit and Component Fixes.
Mining:
• Damage dealt to rocks now directly
scales
with the player's current mining stamina. At zero stamina, hits do
20%
of the damage that is dealt at full stamina.
• Rocks that don't reduce stamina (red sandstone and Arc crablets) aren't affected.
• Stamina no longer depletes while mining Seren Stones, as such Seren stones have had their HP increased from 500 to 2000.
Smithing:
• Smithed items now give
4 invention parts or components per bar used
. For example, an elder rune +5 platebody breaks down into 640 parts/comps.
• Elder rune equipment has a higher chance for components over parts. Component 1 increased from 3% to 9% per roll. Component 2 increased from 2% to 6% per roll.
• Breakdown Perk Activation Chance now has a flat 0.8% per rank to activate.
These changes were implemented to combat long-standing M&S issues: too many ores coming into the game, not enough ores leaving the game via smithing, stone spirits not being valuable, invention components harder to get, etc.

Because stamina now directly scales with damage, experience and ores per hour will vary depending on how active you are while mining. Previously, there were 3 tiers of stamina that determined damage: 100%, 99-1%, and 0%. Hitting RCTs will still do significant amount of damage and reset your stamina. Stone spirits used with perfect mining juju should help keep stamina higher and make mining more AFK.
