what made DG so popular was that it held the best weapons at the time. people always needed to get more tokens to buy new or recharge. this created a demand for less inclined players to buy exp in the form of floors. So,if you were good enough, you could sell floors. which in my opinion, grew a pretty strong community at the time focusing on improving DG techniques, everyone was always trying to be the best.
at this time, there really are not many incentives to DG. Besides the lower levels wanting some of the items from the store, imp/necklaces maybe access to frost dragons, or of course getting 99/120/200m. and of course there are a few hundred players that just DG for the fun of it, such as myself.
DG has always been the #1 thing in RS for me. it's a skill, which actually requires skill. you can always get better at it, which for me was always an incentive.
1 - evolving map. follow players/doors opening. (perhaps there is/was a coding issue behind why they've never had an evolving map, but maybe now that were off of java it could be done.)
2 - the option to open the dung map and resize/move it for permanent placement
3 - a truly competitive side. be it an option to generate a seed, share the seed, and the seed is live for one round. as many teams can use the seed as wanted, and some sort of scoreboard to track the rankings.
I think for DG to become popular again it needs true incentive for the general player base.
maybe the competitive side could aid in this, turning DG into a true E-sport would be awesome! with the support of jagex on a competitive level, maybe it would work!
