HFPE Cont.
She looked around her at the spaceport. It evidently did*’t get much use - there were only three landing pads for cruisers, and the other two were empty. The setting sun outlined rusty comm towers and crumbling control booths, and brown clouds gathered over the mountains in the north, promising another late-night dust storm. Swirls of dead leaves and dirt mirrored the lives of the locals - stagnant, boring. Kathryn had only been on the planet two days, but a visit to the planet’s largest population centre - a nearby city of three million - had shown that the planet was just as dull as every other one in this sector. It was hard to imagine that ten thousand parsecs away, there existed the Neran and Solar systems, dense, lively, and bright, with hundreds of billions of people from tens of thousands of planets. Perhaps, one day…
Another voice interrupted her thoughts,
“Chief, we’re about ready up here. If you and the sergeant are done having your little moment, we’ll be on our way.”
Mildly irritated by the joke, Kathryn looked down at her comm badge to reply, but Oakley had reached his first.
“We’re all set. Transporter room, beam us up.”
