i notice the wolf attacking me, though a bit too late. the wolf dashes past me, raking my side with its claw. i let out an exclamation in pain while christina shouts my name. i get up, but hunched over and holding the afflicted area, which has gotten a claw-shaped, scorching scar. christina runs over to my location and notices the wound, but has no time to react as the wolf jumps and tackles her to the ground, or it would if i did not push her out of the way. the wolf lands and turns around, its eyes burning even fiercer as it looks at me. the wolf slashes again, clashing against my blade then trying to bite, although i avoid it. christina hastily attempts to experiment with water and air runes, summoning what could be compared to a waterfall which puts the beast down once and for all. it seems to get extinguished, and leaves behind nothing but ashes. getting time to rest, i hunch over again and hold my wounded area

christina: "I'm so sorry. I could've prevented that."

me: "That is fine, it regenerates eventually."

christina: "Perhaps, but it should still get looked at. Such a gruesome wound..."

me: "For now, time to focus on getting out of here. We need to go someplace safe where we can speak in solitude. A long time ago you mentioned a grotto deep in the Mort Myre swamp. Perhaps we should move in that direction."

christina: "That's a possibility, but for now we have to find my amulet. You know how much it means to me."

me: "Fine... wait, did you see something sparkle?"

christina: "See what?"

i point somewhere on the ground, where the misplaced symbol can be found. christina picks it up and ties the two ends together, putting it on again. i hear thunder nearby, but the sky is completely clear. as christina turns around to face me, her face goes from happiness to horror

me: "Let me guess... it's right behind me."
They see me rollin', they better run...

The firebeast lets out one last cracked roar of defiance as it disintegrates into smouldering ashes. Calm seems to befall the area for a short while.

But meanwhile, something lurks in the shadows, watching its prey. Its primary instincts tell it to charge in, pick off the wounded fighter…but it knows it won’t be able to hold up against them, and on top of that it must report back…

And so, the obscured creature vanishes off into the shadows, the glint of its eyes behind Christina being the last they would see of it. For now…

A Short While Later

“Ah! There you are!” Barlor turns round as a familiar character approaches. “I’ve been looking everywhere. Something odd’s going on, these strange creatures are appearing all over the place and attacking people. Not just Gielenor, other worlds too.” I look down at the frozen corpse and the pile of ash. “Er…looks like you already ran into some.”

i look at duncan, curious

me: "Hmm? You know about this?"

christina: "Barlor? Who is that man?"

me: "Ah, perhaps an introduction is in order before we start. Christina, this is Duncan. He has been a faithful ally these days, so no need to... test him."

christina giggles a little

me: "Duncan, this is Christina, an old ally of mine. Do not let her attire fool you, she is not as pious as she used to be. Strong lady too. She wanders Morytania like she owns the place."

duncan: "Barlor?"

me: "Anyway, what is this business? How could you know about these... beasts? You have some explaining to do."

(I’m gonna go into script mode here, it works quite well for scenes with lots of dialogue)

---

Me: Barlor. You name is Barlor.

Barlor: Yes, what’s so funny?

Me: Nothing. Nothing’s funny.

Barlor: You’re literally holding your mouth shut to stop yourself laughing.

Me: *Snort* No I’m not.

Barlor: Can we just get to the point?!

Me: OK, fine, fine. Well, I’m sorry, but I really don’t have an explanation for where these creatures are coming from, all I know is a few days after your battle with Xox ended, these gateways started opening up, not just in Gielenor, but other places too. And all these strange monsters just start coming through them and terrorizing people. Honestly, I’m surprised it took this long for you to run into one of them. The gateways always close before anyone can get near them, so we don’t know anything about them, either.

I have a kind of theory about what might be causing this. Could I show you both something, quickly?

I pull out a large brown book, which I open, sliding out a loose photograph. Placing on the ground, I channel some sort of magical energy at it. At once, it bursts into white flames, and a light aura-like energy appears, big enough for someone to walk through, which I do immediately, vanishing. The portal doesn't seem to give off any heat.

just out of curiosity, do you genuinely find the name funny or is it comic relief? also with that name, we have five names that respect the alphabet: ashlin, barlor, christina, duncan and ellessa

i look at the portal and get ready to move. i stick my hand through to test and nothing happens aside from the hand vanishing from sight. i pull it back and look at christina

christina: "I don't know. This seems dangerous."

me: "Says the one who wandered the Sanguinesti region alone and with nothing but rags. Where did your sense of adventure go? Besides, better to proceed than to wait and get mauled."

christina: "Yes, but... I wonder if we can return from this alive. I have a family, you know."

me: "Never stopped you from warring against the gods and Sliske."

christina: "Yes, but that was before my..."

me: "Have you grown soft over the years?"

christina: "Or maybe you have grown more callous."

me: "Listen. There is no time for second thoughts. Whatever is happening, the only way to solve this is by listening to what Duncan has to say. This may sound harsh, but in these times there is no room for formalities. You mentioned you have a family. Perhaps you want to keep them safe by ridding Gielinor of these beasts, yes?"

christina: "I..."

me: "We wasted enough time now. Duncan is probably waiting. Now get through this gate before..."

christina: "Barlor?"

me: "What now!?"

christina: "Will you hold my hand?"

me: "For what reason?"

christina: "Nothing, just to be nice."

me: "*sigh*, what did i just say?"

christina: "Please?"

christina looks at me with an innocent smile

me: "I... I... *sigh* fine, I never could say no to you."

i hold her hand

me: "If Duncan gets any ideas, this is your fault."

christina giggles slightly

me: (Hard to believe this is the same woman who stood defiant in a warzone.)

we walk through the gate together

note: parentheses indicates thinking
They see me rollin', they better run...

(Sorry this is delayed, things got kind of busy. It seems I may have accidentally bigged this up, so this scene may be a slight disappointment for you)

As Barlor and Christina enter the portal they find themselves on top of an old hill. In front of them are several standing stones with names engraved on them. Barlor might recognize the names of Magery, Eno and Master 1.

Me: Hey, are you two-

Barlor and Christina very hastily separate their hands

Me: Uh, anyway…recently I’ve been digging around, studying various pieces of lore…mostly about these beings called absolutes – We’ve actually met two or three of them, you might see their names here…Well, it turns out, they were a pretty big deal. Had this thing called the Forum Fight Alliance, and they basically ran everything here. But they haven’t been seen or heard of for ages. Except for occasional appearances like the ones we saw.

Then, very recently, people just kind of decided they were gone, and started building monuments like this all over the multiverse. That’s when these creatures started appearing, so I think the two are connected. My best guess is that with the absolutes gone, people are trying to find a way to seize power for themselves. There’s been all kinds of stuff like rumours of relics and artefacts connected to them as well. I think someone is sending these monsters deliberately; they always show up in strategic places, and those wolf-like ones are sent out first to scout. What do you think?

i listen as well as i can, thinking through the situation

me: "Artifacts... pah. There are no shortcuts on the road to power. Lucien taught us that much. Anyway, power like this cannot be performed without leaving trails. Is it possible to track the magic to its source?"

christina: "The wolves were so ferocious, yet they were simply scouts? If there are stronger creatures, thousands, if not millions of innocents could die!"

duncan: "Then you understand the problem."

christina thinks back to her family. her only son is but an infant and she knows her husband must protect the area as a whole, leaving the boy defenseless. she gasps in realization of what could happen

me: "Christina? Is something wrong?"

from this point on, i will detail a past event in order to give christina some more character, seeing as how she was basically thrown in the story with no buildup. this takes place directly after the world wakes quest

guthix has recently been slain, with all the followers of the gods retreating, leaving the group of adventurers alone with saradomin and zilyana. aside from barlor and christina, there can be seen a pirate, an archer brandishing a crystal bow, an average looking man donning a legends cape, a karamjan native, a yanillean watchman with ties to ogres and a desert dweller. christina slowly walks towards saradomin, unable to believe that her god has returned. she stands only two meters away from him and looks him in the eye. her smile slowly turns to a frown and her head bows down, tears running from her eyes, gathering at her chin and dripping to the ground

saradomin: "Is something the matter, child?"

christina: "I don't know. It's just... I'm glad to see you here, but did Guthix have to die?"

saradomin: "I didn't want him to die either, but there was no choice. While he still lived, i was forbidden access to Gielinor. Now that I've returned, I can continue to spread order through the land."
They see me rollin', they better run...

christina: "You're just going to war with Zamorak again, aren't you?"

saradomin: "Unfortunately, yes. His ideals conflict greatly with mine. I can understand your reluctance. If you wish, you can come with me."

christina dries her tears with her hands

chirstina: "I'd like do, but I wish to stay here. I'm no crusader. I can't fight in a war, even in your name."

saradomin: "I understand. You know, I've been watching you from afar, ever since you started your adventure."

christinas eyes light up

christina: "You... you did? Truly?"

saradomin: "Yes I have. Ever since you enchanted your necklace with my power, your ties to me have strengthened. You fought valiantly for me, but you still took time to pursue your own goals. You weren't blinded in faith. I'm proud to call you a Saradominist."

christina: "I have no words... other than... thank you."

saradomin: "No, I should be thanking you, for your continued support. If you don't want to fight further for me, I can at least grant you more power."

christina: "Yes please."

saradomin stretches his hand. christinas amulet appears to float in the air, the string still around her neck. she looks in awe as it starts to glow blue, then goes back to its silver coloring, more radiant than ever. She holds it in her hand, with a smile on her face

saradomin: "There. I blessed it with my own power. You should notice your bond to me is stronger than ever. Your prayers will be more reliable and your magic should be more easily controlled. You may also notice the symbol itself has become unbreakable, but the string is still made of completely normal wool. Should you lose it, you can still feel its presence. "

christina: "Thank you. I shall treasure it."

saradomin: "That would be wise. It might save your life one day. Remember: hold it close to your heart, but don't be blinded by faith. Take the time to pursue your own dreams, Christina. Zyliana!"

zyliana: "I'm with you"

saradomin and zilyana exit, leaving the group alone
They see me rollin', they better run...

Me: Well, I don’t actually know any spells for tracing magic. And what I’m talking about, if my research is correct, likely isn’t magical in the slightest. It’s Master 1’s Cannon. Well, no, it’s not, but there’s a rumour that it’s somewhere on Gielenor. He was by far one of the most powerful absolutes, so it’d make sense that people would go after something associated with him.

From what I’ve gathered, what we’re actually dealing with here is probably just an old prototype dwarf cannon, so I suspected it would be somewhere in or near Keldagrim. On top of that, the locations of these attacks have been slowly getting near that area. We can probably get there quite quickly from the wilderness.

I walk back through the portal
