She ran straight up to the werewolf.

Teegan stopped, and, seeing her sister within striking distance of the creature, yelled at the top of her voice. With a spell on the ready, she dashed back.

Sukrae ran with her, his swords glinting in the sun. Twenty feet away, Teegan lifted her staff, ready to throw the spell.

"No!" screamed Taena, leaping in front of the werewolf, "No! Don't cast!"

"Why not?" Teegan called back, confused.

"Come here!" Taena yelled.

Sharing a puzzled look, Sukrae and Teegan walked slowly foward, stopping ten feet away. From there they could see that the werewolf didn't seem to be doing anything, and appeared to be quite safe to approach. "Are you sure it's safe?" Teegan asked, examining the deadly creature.

"Quite sure."

"Alright then, I guess." Cautiously, Teegan walked up to it, dagger still in hand. It didn't do anything. Sukrae had followed her, his swords ready to strike.

The wolf's skin seemed to shift, and its fur disappeared rapidly. Its fangs drew up, and its limbs grew human.

Soon there wasn't a wolf. In its place was a man, around twenty, with black hair and dark blue eyes. The only wolflike thing he had was his teeth, which were sharper than a human's, like all werewolves'. His skin was lightly tanned, and he wore black pants and tunic, which were bloodstained and torn. The man was quite handsome, even with his overly pointy teeth, and he grinned at Sukrae and Teegan's surprised faces.

"Well," said Taena, smiling, "meet my fiancé, Brant. Brant, this is my sister Teegan, and Sukrae, who has come with us."

"That's Brant?!" asked Teegan, eyes growing wide.

"Yes. You've never met him, have you?"

"No, I haven't. But you didn't tell me he was a . . ."

Brant broke in, still smiling, "A werewolf?"

"Yes."

"I've been a werewolf since age ten. My parents were werewolves, and my grandparents. As a matter of fact, my whole family are werewolves. You see, they wait until you're ten, and then you get to choose if you want to be werewolf or normal. So far, everybody's chosen werewolf."

Taena grinned. "I was surprised when he first told me, but after that I was fine with it. Doesn't make much difference, one way or another."

"By the way, sweetie, what are you doing here? And where is here? All I remember is somebody getting in our house, and fighting him."

"Here is the wilderness, and I'm here rescuing you. Anyway . . . "

"Wait," Teegan interrupted, "all the defenders are killed, right?"

"Yes," said Brant, "that was the last batch that we killed there. The castle is ours."

"Good. Well, let's get washed and eat something before us telling you why we're here, and you telling us what you were doing this whole time, alright?"

Brant laughed. "I'm not hungry, but I'll show you the baths and things. I need to get cleaned up too."

"Let's go, then."

Later, the four stood up on a tower, letting the wind blow through their hair.

Sukrae and Teegan were talking, and Taena had her head resting on Brant's shoulder. They had spoken earlier, and Brant had told them about his life as a slave.

He hadn't been able to remember anything about his life, or even that he was a werewolf, and had been another of Kerr's pawns until Kerr's death at the hands of Taena.

Then he had suddenly remembered, and with the other slaves had broken the door down. The other slaves had gathered sticks and clubs as they rushed through the fortress, and he had turned wolven.

They had killed every guard they came across, until meeting the squad in the courtyard. That had been a hard battle, and when Brant had seen the last bunch of guards, coming in from patrol, he had decided to try and take them down before they got to the other fight.

While he was killing that lot, assisted by an unidentified ally, the other slaves had finished their fight, and gone to search out any remaining guards.

When the guards had all died, he had turned to look at his ally, and to his joy had seen Taena. That was why he had run towards them.

Later Sukrae, Teegan, Taena, and Brant had met up with the rest of the slaves, and had heard the report. All guards were dead, but no trace of Vata, Kerr, or Vata's servant, Kinatu was to be found. Also, four horses and a cart were gone.

In a few days, it was agreed, they would leave, with all the ex-slaves. They would take everything takeable from the fortress, and leave it to the wilderness.

They would stay together until Edgeville, when they would split apart, the ex-slaves all going back to their homes, wherever their homes were, and Taena and Brant would go back to their Falador house. Sukrae would come back with Teegan to Draynor, and live with her.

But now, they were content to stand atop a high tower, with a warm breeze rustling their clothing. Taena and Brant were surveying the view, together after so much time.

"We really need to get married soon," whispered Teegan to Sukrae.

"Yes."

"And I mean soon."

"Oh dear, don't tell me that you're . . ."

"Yes, I am."

Taena, who had been eavesdropping, jumped. "Did you hear that?" she asked Brant.

"No, what?"

"Teegan's going to have a baby."

"But they're not married."

Taena wasn't listening. 'I knew I should never have left them alone on that riverbank . . . ," she said to herself thoughtfully.

Five years later, Teegan was sitting in a meadow. Sukrae was fixing the roof, and she figured that it might be better to take the children on a picnic so he could work in peace.

One of them, the girl, ran up to her mother on wobbly four-year-old legs. "Look!" she exclaimed, holding a posy of flowers out to her mother.

"That's pretty, Ravana," said Teegan, sniffing them. From behind her jumped Ralan, Ravana's twin brother. He had silver hair and eyes, just like his twin, and they both wore moon necklaces the Sukrae had given them.

The necklaces were real silver, and they were the twins' most precious possession.

Ralan jumped on his mother, nearly squashing Ravana's flowers. "Ow," protested Teegan, groaning in mock agony.

She sat up straight, giving Ralan a poke. Laughing, he pulled on her foot, trying to take her shoe off.

They played for a few minutes. Teegan was concentrated on her children, and so didn't hear the heavy footfalls until too late.

When she did look up, she saw the neighbor's big bull, standing only ten feet away. It must have escaped from its field.

Snorting, it advanced.

Ravana and Ralan yelled, and ran behind her. Quickly she got a spell ready, and was about to throw it when Ravana's moon necklace emitted a sudden flash of light, and Ravana threw a gleaming ball of silver at the bull.

It hit the creature right on, and the bull sank to the grass, asleep.

Casting an unbelieving look at her child, who didn't seem to think she had done anything remarkable, Teegan scooped up the twins and started back to the house. She would tell the neighbors about the bull when she got home.
