Later in the morning, Sukrae awoke. Yawning, he made his way out of the tent, blinking at the dim sunlight. As he stood up, he blinked again, then again, just to make sure that he wasn't seeing things.
There stood Taena and Teegan, grinning wickedly at him. The ghostlike aura about them both had grown, the they each held a staff with a curved top that had a glittering red gem hanging from the tip. The gem was glowing, sending out its own light.
As he watched, Teegan jumped up to stand atop her staff, apparently with no effort whatsoever. 'Wow,' he thought, 'they've gotten a lot stronger.' "How?..." He asked.
Teegan jumped down. "These staves store power. You know how we have powers that sort of bubble up to a certain level, then stop? Well, these let us keep bubbling up, and all the extra power just gets stored in the staves. We can use them whenever we want."
Sukrae was impressed. He was still better then one of them, he thought, but not both combined.
Taena grinned again. "You know," she said, "maybe you shouldn't come to Kerr's with us. After all, we're mages, but he could throw spells at you from a distance and you wouldn't be able to defend yourself."
He smiled too. "Have you been waiting this entire trip to say that?"
"More or less."
"Well, you waited 'till the right time. Although I AM still a mage, and quite capable of defending myself."
"Yes, I know. Still though, Teegan and I will be able to do more damage. Let's go?"
Teegan nodded.
"Can we eat first? Sukrae asked.
"We have already. There's food by the fire, and you can eat while we pack. I want to get this over with."
--
Twenty minutes later, everything was packed, everyone had eaten, and everyone had a weapon in hand.
"Ladies and Gentlemen," Taena announced, "charge!" And they started off to the last leg of their adventure.
