OFFICIAL UNITED NATIONS TRANSCRIPT
CLASSIFIED INFORMATION: DO NOT DISCLOSE
Rep. McArthur (U.S.): Dr. Jensen, you specialize in abstract physics, correct?
Dr. Jensen: That is correct.
Rep. McArthur (U.S.): Could you explain whether it would be possible for artificial intelligences to travel from a virtual world to the real universe?
Dr. Jensen: All I can do is recite some of the latest theories. Of course it has long been known that the human mind possesses enormous power. Tests have shown the ability of subjects to influence random events by thinking of an outcome. Now suppose that millions of humans all concentrated on a virtual world at the same time for a period of two years. Do you suppose it is possible that the concentrated brainpower has made this virtual world into a real universe somewhere. If so, it is theoretically possible that a wormhole could open between that world and ours. Because the brain-created virtual universe is very unstable, perhaps it would take no more than a large explosion to create such a wormhole. Of course these are all just theories, that should be considered with reasonable skepticism...

CHAPTER THREE

“Mind explaining what that thing is?” Tyler whispered angrily at the secretary as he loaded his SAR-27.

“It all started several days ago when we spotted several space ships around Saturn. Our advanced telescopes were able to identify a logo present on the side of each ship. We suspected China or Russia and began a massive search of the internet and our intelligence databases to find this logo. We found a match, but in an extremely unlikely place. The logo belongs to the Black Knights, a hostile, mechanized army from a virtual reality game called RuneSpace. I think it’s completely insane, but the U.N. is actually holding hearings, discussing whether it’s possible that video game characters could have materialized in our world!”

Tyler froze, thinking it over. He had played RuneSpace; he and Josh had even fought Black Knights on a quest. The red flash must have been a laser from a device attached to the arm of the knight’s mechanized armor. That’s why the glass had remained intact; light passes through glass, but a strong laser can burn through light-absorbing materials.

Tyler turned to the other Guardsmen, “I don’t know the physics of how the Black Knights got here, but they explain everything that’s happened so far. Now, these knights have superior technology, but they are by no means invincible.”

To prove it, Tyler stood up and walked over to the window, stepping over Will’s body. The Black Knight was still standing there and the familiar buzzing sound began again as the particles inside the laser device warmed up. But Tyler didn’* wait for it to fire, he slammed the **** of his rifle through the bullet-riddled glass at head level. Then, dropping the rifle he reached through the small hole and grabbed the black helmet on the other side, pulling the knight’s head through the hole. Wrapping his arm around the helmet in a headlock, Tyler pulled down and used the weight of his body to pull the knight’* neck against the jagged edge of the glass. With a sickening squelch, Tyler fell to the floor with the severed head in his arms under a shower of blood.
Tyler’s chest heaved from the exertion, but he smiled with his first victory over this new enemy. His smile vanished when the glass behind him shattered and the headless Knight came crashing through. The abomination turned slowly to face Tyler and a long black blade slid out from the creature’s armored right wrist.
Tyler had forgotten that life in RuneSpace did not depend on organs but on hitpoints, which this knight obviously had plenty of, to survive such an injury. Tyler jumped up into a crouching position and drew a long knife out of the sheath strapped to his calf. The knight swung with his arm-blade but Tyler parried with his boot knife, sliding the blade down the long black sword and in between the knight’s middle and index fingers. The knight flinched and staggered backwards and Tyler tackled it. The skilled soldier placed one knee on the creature’s chest and the other on its right arm while repeatedly stabbing downwards into the bloody stump that once held the knight’s head.

Suddenly the knight’s body disappeared, leaving only the bloodstained black armor lying on the floor under Tyler.
“Whew,” Tyler panted, rolling over and sitting up.
The faces of his fellow Guardsmen were all looking through the hole in the window, through which three more black ships could be seen landing.

Their platoon commander had gained some confidence from Tyler’* victory over the first knight and he was soon heard barking orders.
“Alpha Squad, get through that hole and use whatever cover you can find to flank right. We want them under fire from all sides as soon as those hatch doors open! Bravo, you do the same but from the left. Everyone else fire from the hole or the doors. Remember it will probably take more than one hit to take these mother ******’s down!”
As the leader of Alpha Squad, Tyler led eight other riflemen through the hole and into the charred loading area. They used various bits of wreckage to stealthily find their way to the right of the three ships.
Once they were in place, Tyler whispered to his men, “Those look like double-ops, so expect two Black Knights from each ship. Try to keep your distance from them; their mechanized armor makes them unexpectedly strong in hand to hand combat.”
The three hatch doors simultaneously hissed as they slowly opened. Everyone waited in silence. As soon as black boots hit the blackened pavement, the battlefield erupted in deafening noise. Numerous grenades toppled the black ships and sent unlucky knights flying like rag dolls.
Tyler’s perception of time once more descended to slow motion. With uncanny accuracy he placed three shots in one knight before it even hit the ground. However, each knight got up upon hitting the ground and turned their lasers on the nearest Guardsmen. Most of them were headed towards Bravo Squad, where Caroline and eight others unloaded streams of bullets from behind the wreckage of a truck. Two Guardsmen fell instantly with a sizzling sound as the lasers did their work.

“Caroline!” Tyler yelled, getting up and running toward the other side of the battlefield, firing with his rifle at the advancing knights.
A Black Knight appeared from nowhere and caught Tyler in the stomach with the **** of a machine gun, sending him flying. Tyler landed on his back several feet away from his rifle. The knight sprinted over to his position and kicked Tyler’s machine pistol away from him. Tyler watched in horror as the knight extended an unusually long, serrated arm-blade. Tyler saw Caroline throwing something in the distance and suddenly a shrapnel stick embedded itself into the knight’s right shoulder. A bloody explosion severed the blade-holding arm, causing the knight to shriek in agony.
Tyler once again took advantage of the enemy’s distraction to wrestle the knight to the ground and, ripping off the creature’s helmet, proceeded to club it to death with the helm.
Tyler stood up and grabbed his machine pistol, looking around the battlefield. Only Caroline and two others remained of Bravo Squad, but they had succeeded in bringing down their attackers. Two Black Knights remained assaulting the entrance to the Pentagon from behind cover. Tyler used his unique position to take one of them out with a few pistol rounds.
Once the other noticed it was alone, it raised its arms and Tyler distinctly heard the incantation for a teleport spell. A purple orb formed around the crouching knight, but it wavered, unable to transport the knight into another dimension. The knight cried out in pain and shuddered violently before falling dead.

I like this fight against RuneSpace monsters, it's very exciting. They might just adapt to use scapped machinery from the RuneSpacians too, that would be cool. The plot's thickening up, and I can't wait for the next part! I'll try to keep reading as you continue, but I've finished it for now.

Your turn to read my story (SR Exchange).
