OFFICIAL UNITED NATIONS TRANSCRIPT
CLASSIFIED INFORMATION: DO NOT DISCLOSE
Rep. McArthur (U.S.): We would now like to question you about the event known as the “mind-swap”. Could you explain to the assembly what happened?
Gower: Some time after the launch of RuneScape 3, the virtual reality equivalent of RuneScape 2, a group of criminals broke into the Jagex main office with the intent to steal the identities of the millions who subscribed to the game. However, they inadvertently altered the fundamental programming of the game, resulting in the mind-swap. This phenomenon involved the transfer of artificial intelligences from the game to the bodies of RuneScape players. Meanwhile, the (pause) soul of the player remained in the game.
Rep. Thompson (G.B.): And do you have any idea how this happened?
Gower: Not for sure. It seems obvious that the artificial intelligence entered the brain via the direct connection made by the virtual reality helmets. However, we have no clue how the artificial intelligence managed to sustain itself once disconnected from the game, nor how the souls of the humans left their minds or remained intact within the game world.
Rep. McArthur (U.S.): What changes were implemented after this catastrophe?
Gower: The game was shut down entirely. Also, virtual reality helmets were strictly regulated regarding how much and what type of information could be sent through the connection, in order to prevent future disasters.

CHAPTER TWO

Tyler showed up on time, though extremely tired, the next morning. He and the other Guardsmen were soon put to work loading supplies into the transport trucks to be taken to the Pentagon, which would be their home for the next few weeks. When all the supplies were on their way, Tyler took a seat next to Caroline on the back of a truck as the entire convoy rumbled into motion. The Monday morning traffic slowed them down, but the forest green trucks were soon rolling into place in front of the imposing white building.

“Tired?” Caroline asked him as they jumped out of the back of the truck.

“Yeah, we stayed out way too late,” replied Tyler as they each grabbed one end of a long crate containing several rifles and began carrying it into the building.

An anxious-looking secretary suddenly burst out of the front doors of the Pentagon.

“Guys, could you please hurry up?” he said in a nasal voice.

“You think we’re taking our time?” Tyler asked him.

“But you have to... before the...”

Tyler soon realized the secretary was struggling with what he could say without revealing confidential information. However he seemed alone in coming to this realization.

“I think we should hurry up,” Tyler said just loudly enough for everyone to hear him. Over the past year the other Guardsmen had learned that this tone of voice could only mean that something serious would happen if they disregarded him.

Tyler and Caroline went back and stacked another crate of rifles on top of the one they had been holding. Then, straining under the weight, they jogged toward the entrance to the Pentagon. The rest of the soldiers followed their lead, carrying twice the usual weight at twice the speed. The secretary quietly thanked Tyler as he passed before nervously watching the skies. After depositing his load outside, Tyler returned to the trucks to grab more supplies when the secretary let out a nervous yelp. Tyler looked up and saw the glint of something in the sky heading towards the Pentagon.
“Everyone inside now!” Tyler yelled, grabbing the secretary as he sprinted back towards the building.
The last of the Guardsmen were inside the building when a rocket from nowhere crashed into the canvas top of a truck full of ammunition. Time seemed to pass in slow motion as Tyler threw the doors closed and locked them. Through the glass they could see the enormous explosion of the gas tank and ammunition. Hundreds of bullets and bits of shrapnel hurtled toward the Pentagon, only to be stopped by the bullet-proof glass.
Time began to flow at normal speed once more as everyone breathed a sigh of relief. It was now hard to see through the spidery cracks that coated the bullet-proof window, but Tyler could tell that a large, dark object from the sky hovered down to land where the trucks once stood. There was a hiss as a hatch door opened and heavy boots stepped out of the thing. It walked over to the window through which only a blurred black figure was visible. A young Guardsman named Will Kemmler stepped forward slowly.

“Don’t!” whispered Tyler, but Will kept going.

Soon he was on the other side of the glass, mere inches from the thing. A strange humming noise was soon heard, coming from the creature outside. Suddenly there was a hissing noise and a flash of red light. Will screamed and turned around. A hole had been burned halfway through his chest, revealing his bloody organs. Whatever it was had cauterized the veins, so no blood came from the injury. Curiously, the glass window remained intact.

The other Guardsmen were all silently opening crates and pulling out rifles and ammunition, looking sadly at Will, who had now collapsed on the floor, dead.

The Virginia countryside flew by outside the windows of Josh’s car as he sped down the interstate on his way to the Pentagon.

“Shouts... both sides... we’ve got the land... they’ve got the view... here’s the clue,” the radio crackled as Josh’s car finally got too far away from the station.

Josh punched the scan button on the radio and the frequency flashed up to 102.5.

“...mysterious explosion at the Pentagon. News helicopters are on their way as we speak.”

Josh immediately pressed the scan button once again to keep the frequency where it was.

“Eyewitnesses claim a rocket fired from something that looked like a stealth bomber blew up a National Guard truck, causing the explosion. A unit of the District of Columbia National Guard is currently holed up inside the Pentagon, protecting the nation’s top military commanders and analysts. Backup is on the way...”

Josh’s cell ph(c)one rang and he turned off the radio to pick it up.

“Hello?” he asked.

“You’ve no doubt heard of the attack?” the rough voice on the other side spoke clearly.

“Yeah! What should I do? Who are you?”

“Find your way into the Pentagon by any means possible. This is of utmost importance, now more than ever.”

The line went dead and Josh dropped the ph(c)one onto the passenger seat, mind racing.
