CHAPTER TWO
Tyler showed up on time, though extremely tired, the next morning. He and the other Guardsmen were soon put to work loading supplies into the transport trucks to be taken to the Pentagon, which would be their home for the next few weeks. When all the supplies were on their way, Tyler took a seat next to Caroline on the back of a truck as the entire convoy rumbled into motion. The Monday morning traffic slowed them down, but the forest green trucks were soon rolling into place in front of the imposing white building.
“Tired?” Caroline asked him as they jumped out of the back of the truck.
“Yeah, we stayed out way too late,” replied Tyler as they each grabbed one end of a long crate containing several rifles and began carrying it into the building.
An anxious-looking secretary suddenly burst out of the front doors of the Pentagon.
“Guys, could you please hurry up?” he said in a nasal voice.
“You think we’re taking our time?” Tyler asked him.
“But you have to... before the...”
Tyler soon realized the secretary was struggling with what he could say without revealing confidential information. However he seemed alone in coming to this realization.
“I think we should hurry up,” Tyler said just loudly enough for everyone to hear him. Over the past year the other Guardsmen had learned that this tone of voice could only mean that something serious would happen if they disregarded him.
