A brilliant, blinding flash of light enveloped Admeri before he could finish the word. It seeped through every pore, invading his mind and his very being, tearing and dissolving his flesh. He might have screamed, but it was caught in the maelstrom of light and evaporated into nonexistence. The only sound was like a great rush of wind, but multiplied a thousand times, deafening and as invading as the glowing onslaught. Admeri clenched his eyes and his fists, curled into a ball, but it shut out none of assault upon his senses.
The universe warped around him, drawing him back to his full height, then stretching him further. He twisted and seemed to unravel until all that was left was his soul. Then the light began to diminish, though the roaring wind carried on. His sight returned as the radiance faded, and he found a green blot growing rapidly in his vision. It was speckled with dozens of little dark dots. In seconds, the vista focused, and Admeri realized the green blot was a grassy field and the specks were people. He also realized he was approaching them at a speed nearing terminal velocity. He screamed again, and this time he heard it, rushing by his ears in the wind.
Just when Admeri was sure terrible impact was imminent, he suddenly slowed, not so quickly as to be unpleasant, but more rapidly than he would have believed possible. The braking was timed perfectly so that he came to a complete stop the instant his feet touched the grass, and gravity pulled him softly through the last inches, his feet alighting gently in the turf.
He hardly had time to gain his bearings before Aurgur's voice boomed through the air. "Greetings, ladies and gentlemen. I am, as most of you should be aware, Aurgur, the Death Light and your guide through the tangled paths of the underworld. With the timely arrival of Admeri Tryst, we have the full number for a party beginning its journey. If you would all kindly gather in the center of the clearing, it would be much appreciated."
