To-dos, got it! Thanks.
Yes, it's much easier to battle it out on map. But there are certain rules to battling against specific units. For example: When fighting with chariots, always do "automatic", while when fighting against chariots, play it on map. It's the opposite when fighting horse archers though, you fight automatic; but when fighting with them, fight on map. I still haven't figured out how to combat elephants, since I rarely encounter them in battle. That's about what I know, of course it all really depends on your strategy skill. But I think you're rather good at that, so it's better to perform them "on map".
So you play with a higher number of troop than I do? I have 80 hastati per card.

:O Do you really not see the strategy that is involved in the Total War Series?
I don't know whether these rules are true, but that's what me (Mostly me) and my brothers came to realize while playing the game. I could be wrong, but I've tried my theories on several occasions and so far, they seem to work.
^_^ Nice! I probably could handle more troops, but it would considerably slow the game down, so I'd rather not venture there.

Well, there are strategies on the battle field, that much I'm aware, but not about when to auto-resolve and when not to, except perhaps that if I am horrendously outnumbered thus didn't care about the loss, or where victory is certain and I didn't care about casualties, then yeah, auto-resolve.

Yeah, I'm not sure whether or not it was purposefully done that way, but I think it's because some of the units are really hard to to use or kill. For example, chariots that are brand new tend to be rather ineffective in close combat when battling "On map". But when the combat is resolved automatically the chariots achieve a lot. I think it's due to the fact that the computer is able to utilize the full potential of the chariot when resolving the battle automatically.
Same goes for horse archers: When they are "On map" it's almost impossible to defeat them, while your own horsemen tire themselves out trying to catch them, the horse archers just unleash death on them; and when they run out of arrows, the enemy troop is so demoralized, exhausted and outnumbered that a simple charge is necessary. I think that's why horse archers, chariots and elephants are forbidden from tournaments.
And there are ways to win when you are incredibly outnumbered: "The noob box"! Do you know what it is?

I don't know what the Noob box is :/

Regardless, I didn't find chariots or horse archers impossible to kill, unless the battle difficulty is extremely hard...
But I do hate fighting them. They are quite a pain. Elephants, on the other hand, can be countered by lots of spear men. Chariots and horse archers simply out maneuver any of my ordinary arrangement of army... so either they had to be taken out by arrows, or catapults.
O_o

The fact that you don't know what the Noob Box is does not surprise me, I can't imagine you using it =P It basically consists of forming a square with phalanges so that nothing can come in and there are no sides exposed. Or putting your men at the very edge of the map, so that you don't have flanks. It work rather well, except when faced with catapult or archer fire.

They are not impossible to kill, but they are hard to kill and they damage your men a lot before you can put them flight. And, yes, arrows are probably the best way to take them down. Although it takes a really long time. Romans though, don't have a lot of spearmen units (Only one =( ) So elephants are hard to get.
You use catapults?
