I hope Bryn’s alright... Although he was just a goofy man, his well-being crossed Eve’s mind, but if an adult male was dragged off like nothing...

The man in the blue cloak co-operated with Gareth’s orders. A defensive position was thusly assembled, tables placed across the entrance. Eve’s eyes went to the side as the barkeeper went to retrieve an axe--by that time, she had strung her bow and nocked an arrow.

To Eve’s surprise, ghastly howls and crashing thumps shook above, “How’d they get up there!?” The beasts feasted upon the hapless victims. Jericho shouted that he would defend the stairway.

To make things worse, something had smashed into the backroom, tackled down the barkeep. His daughter cried out. He probably struck the lupine beast with his axe before he wrestled with it.

The entrance thudded heavily, the beasts wanted in. Others hurled themselves through the windows, one received thrown chairs. The other young woman was also threatened, whilst the other one regained her senses and loosed her crossbow...

Too much happened at the same time. Eve had no time to help anyone--survival of ambushes in the wilderness taught her that quickly. Two Hellhounds came at her at once. Her eyes widened, her heart skipped a beat, the beasts’ eyes glimmered.

Eve aimed at the nearest beast’s mouth and loosed an arrow. She dropped her bow and threw her empty mug at the other beast. Wild-eyed, she withdrew her langseax. She would attempt to plunge the blade into the mouth of the nearest charging Hellhound with locked eye contact and a raspy snarl...

Sir Gareth Arenar

Sir Gareth cringed slightly.

The first reason was because he had asked the barmaid to be the one to wake the others for two specific reasons. She was one of the staff, so her word carried weight than that of some random traveler. And she did not have a weapon, which meant she would be useless in a fight, and sending her upstairs should have at least - in theory - temporarily kept her out of danger. For one of the few who did have a weapon to go upstairs would leave the downstairs defense in an even more precarious position than it was already.

The second reason was because of the man's colourful display of language. Sure, Gareth was hardly the virtuous paragon he presented himself as - he had, after all, committed a supposedly irredeemable act surely for the sake of power and self-preservation - but at least that had practical reasons behind it. And he could see no practical reason for such vulgarity.

All of that mattered little, however, because the monsters were now upon them, much sooner than Gareth had hoped. Fate had allowed them nowhere near enough preparation to drive off an attack on this scale, with monsters bursting in from all sides and even somehow getting onto the second floor.

Most of the tavern would die, he realized. He could probably get away, as could one or two others who found a good hiding spot or slipped through an open window while the beasts were busy feasting on the dead, but the rest were hopeless. So, his thoughts turned to self-preservation.

None of the beasts seemed focused on him specifically. The window behind him was unlikely to hold out much longer, but he wagered there would be enough time for him to make his escape through one of the many others. Then he could turn invisible, and disappear into the night. He had just turned around to make his move when he saw Feli scramble past him, desperately trying to escape the hellhound that set his sights on her. He saw the look of sheer terror in her eyes; the panic in her movements. It was a sight he knew well.

And in that moment, something within him gave way, and he stepped between her and the beast. The dog stopped, and growled at him. He swung, but the dog was out of range. Seeing that he had committed to a strike, the beast lurched forward to for the kill... just as Gareth had predicted. Suddenly, the knight reversed his swing, scoring a vicious slash through the beast's mouth, splitting its tongue in two and driving it back once more.

He could kill the beast, of course, and that would resolve the immediate danger, but with all the other monsters inside the tavern, and throughout the town itself? The girl would still die, but at least she would die knowing someone made an attempt to help her.

The combination of Jericho and Barda shouting upstairs must have drawn the attention of the monsters that had entered the other guest rooms, for a couple of moments later the doors to two of the other rooms burst open - no, they broke off their hinges completely - and two more of the toad-monsters emerged like rockets as their bulky forms bounced against the wall. Both rose up, soulless eyes gazing down the hallway at two tempting targets. Jericho at the top of the stairs, but much more tantalizing was Blake - who was several feet nearer to them.

Both monsters let loose spine-chilling croaks, blood dripping from their maws as they tensed and sprung down the hall - both of them going after the nearer target, Blake. One's maw opened as it sprung, its barbed tongue extending beyond its body like an arrow - where it aimed to pierce the boy's torso and reel him in.

Downstairs, Rila's crossbow bolt flew straight and true - yet a slight change in the Hellhound's movement missed the eye as intended, instead skimming the side of its face and burying into the monster's shoulder. The impact brought out a yelp, breaking its stride and making it stumble, though it quickly rose again and continued the chase - buying Feli precious seconds to get away from its snapping teeth. She had nowhere to go, not really, outside was a death sentence - but inside there were monsters all around. Her foot caught a fallen chair that made her trip, flying a couple of feet and landing roughly - tears flowing down her cheeks as realization set in that she was about to die. That she would feel that ravenous maw sink into her leg and drag her away, those claws that would tear her to ribbons. She scrambled to her feet, head turning, intent on at least trying to dodge-

Only instead she found a massive figure blocking the Hellhound's path, its mouth dripping blood that could only have been its own. She gazed, wide-eyed, at Gareth's back - and could only watch in awe as he fought the monster.

Meanwhile, Annie's attempts at attacking everything in view didn't work as well as she had anticipated. With only one Hellhound coming after her she had absolutely no time to try outrunning the other ones or helping the others, her quick movements only serving to keep her out of the jaws of the hound that wanted to tear her flesh off. Her shortsword cut shallow wounds into the monster, barely keeping it from lashing out at her, but not for lack of trying - it was quick as well, after all, and she would have to do more than swing wildly if she wanted to keep it from killing her.

While Eve's arrow pierced the Hellhound's mouth it did not strike as fatally as she'd wished, in her haste it having pierced the side of the beast's mouth. It snarled in pain, yet this seemed like a hardy beast as it just kept coming at her. The other one ignored the mug that bounced off of its head entirely, as if it didn't even feel it, and with both of the hounds coming close at around the same time Eve's chances were not looking very good.

Until the hound that she had thrown her mug at was suddenly struck by something large and shiny on its side, the heavy impact knocking the monster off its feet momentarily, though it scrabbled back to all fours quite quickly the other hound had left it behind to attack the woman. Heavy footfall drew its attention, revealing the man in the blue cloak charging at the Hellhound - his hands in the process of drawing a shortsword and dagger from their sheaths. On the ground near the creature's feet was a large, silver-steel warhammer.

Its attacker noticed, the hound made to meet the man's charge with a vicious snarl. As they met the man side stepped and slashed his shortsword across the beast's side, tearing open a long wound as its claws just barely missed his armour. It remained standing, turning to come at the man again only to get a slash across its nose before it could build momentum. It retaliated trying to bite at his legs, but was kept at bay by

the man's blades and some good footwork.

((You can kill your monsters now, albeit injuries are likely to be sustained by one or two people in the upstairs group, if not worse for the NPC - the toads are nastier than the Hellhounds.))

With a crash, the toad-creature burst through the doors of the inn upstairs and gazed directly into Jericho's eyes with unfeeling enmity. A chill rushed down the warrior's spine as he reflected on how unfeeling these beings were as they slaughtered innocents. The peace lasted for mere moments.

Its fanged maw opened wide, the barbed tongue launching across the room to capture its newfound prey. Jericho swiped with his sword, scoring a light cut on the tongue as it retracted as quickly as it had come. It leaped forward, launching its tongue again.

The change in distance did not favor Jericho's reflexes, and while he did attempt another swipe and side-step, the maneuver was too late. As the barbed tongue buried itself within his armor, he grunted against the pain and continued his attack. Pulling away as hard as he could, he wrapped the creature's tongue around the sword before drawing the blade across its length. The creature shrieked in pain and pulled the tongue back.

By no small blessing, Jericho was only pulled to the floor instead of into the creature's mouth. Scrambling to his feet, the beast was now upon him in a true melee. Adrenaline seemed to slow time as the warrior brought his sword to meet and deflect the creature's flailing claws. Each strike drove Jericho closer and closer to the stairs, and he knew he was losing ground.

A final gambit, Jericho rotated his wrist from a parry into a cut, holding the sword above his head and pointing the blade downwards. With a quick thrust, the sword sank into the creature's eye. It staggered backwards before collapsing to the ground in a disgusting heap.

Searing pain raced through Jericho's body, realizing the beast had scored a final hit against his abdomen during the gambit. He roared in pain before falling to one knee clutching at the wound. There was another one up here, and he would not be able to hold it off on his own.

Turning towards the stairs, he began to limp down to regroup with the others.
Cower, worship, or beg. All are valid choices.

"Sir" Barda

The toad extended its tongue at Blake. Barda took the barbed tongue instead, in the left forearm at the lower part. seering pain rippled through Barda's spine as the monster pulled. With the other monster somewhat farther away, and the wounded monster preoccupied, Blake went through Barda's pack and retrieved a rondel dagger with which he could defend himself.

The monster, seeing it's chance to grab Blake, let Barda go, and thrust out it's tongue, only to receive the crushing weight of Barda's claymore through its midsection. Barda twisted the blade inflicting even more damage, until he, at last, wrested his sword from the toad. Bleeding profusely, the toad hopped out of the room leacing a blood trail as he hopped. presumably to wait for its ally.

The other toad monster, meanwhile seeing its ally having trouble entered the room to attempt to get at Blake, who was behind Barda once more, and in his hiding place. It attempted to ram Barda out of the way. Barda took the brunt of the ram, and fell to his knees. Seeing a clear shot, the Toad stuck out its tongue at Blake. Barda grabbed the appendage, and Blake went out and stabbed it in the back with the dagger, causing it to croak in pain. Barda received a laceration in the right palm of his hand as a result as a result of grabbing the slimy tongue.

"Will we ever make it out of here, Papi?" Blake said out loud. "Less talkie, more hide-in your-hole-in-the-wall-and-wait-for-me-to-kill-them-ie!" was Barda's answer. Blake made his way back into his hole in the wall.
Just your friendly neighborhood gay boy! =)

Sir Gareth Arenar

With a crossbow bolt in its shoulder and a wounded maw, Gareth's foe already on its last legs, but the mutt did not give up. It spat out a glob of blood and spit, then charged once more.

Gareth thrust his blade forward, but the hellhound ducked under it, and closed its mouth around his ankle. There was a crunching sound, as the beast's teeth failed to pierce the hardened steel of his greave. In that moment, Gareth shifted his blade to one hand, drew his dirk, and dropped to one knee - bringing the dagger down into the creature's eye as he fell.

Wasting no further time, he sheathed the dagger, pried the beast's jaws away, and rose. He spun around, facing the increasingly-battered shutters of the window, and adopted a defensive stance.

An outward curse combined with inward panic was Rila’s immediate response when her shot didn’t go where she wanted it to. Instead of a kill, all she provided was a momentary delay, and since she had to reload her weapon there wasn’t anything else she could do. Her breath caught in her throat as she realized that she was going to be able to do absolutely nothing while someone got eaten.

Yet that was not the way things would go tonight, and she breathed a massive sigh of relief when one of the other men in the tavern stepped in and prevented the untimely death. For a moment, she didn’t actually do anything, but it didn’t take long for her to remember that this wasn’t the end; everything was still going on around her. She still needed to do something, at least if she didn’t want to just stand there and watch other people die.

Fishing out a second bolt, she struggled to place it in the crossbow, fumbling a bit before she managed to get it in and crank it into firing position. At this point it was incredibly difficult to actually find anything to hit that wouldn’t risk someone else. Even with her confidence in her own aim, firing into a melee combat like this made her more than a little nervous. That was probably why she went for what was the easiest shot, that shot being the hellhound that was on the barkeep over by the counter. It seemed like it was still a worthwhile shot to make, at least...she hoped she wasn’t wrong.

If she could aim at a point where she could hit the brain, that would be best. If not, well, anything fatal was a priority, while everything after that was just how badly she could hurt it.
Done in by the dubious doings of destiny.
