It was amusing how quickly most people were deterred by just the sight of a weapon, regardless of how useless it would actually be in their current situation. Rila might have been a good shot, but that was absolutely irrelevant in a closed-in scenario such as this one. She wouldn’t have any desire to fire the weapon inside anyways; her experience was limited to mostly target practice and hunting, and she had never actually shot a person before.

Still, it had a good effect for her, even if it wasn’t at all intended. She noticed everyone stop what they had been doing, mentally shrugged to herself - as she didn’t realize the connection between what she had done and what they did - and finally stood up, pulling her bolts out of the quiver that held them before dumping out the water that had collected inside. It was a surprisingly large amount, and served to make her sigh before replacing the ammunition.

This was a shitty night, to put it mildly.

At least it could only get better, now that she was finally out of the rain and a little drier. Still, her legs were getting a bit tired from crouching as she was, so Rila grabbed a free chair from a nearby table, pulled it over as close to the fire as it could safely go, and sat down, leaning back slightly as she waited for a semblance of comfort to return.
Done in by the dubious doings of destiny.

"Ryker," Jericho managed. His voice sounded old despite his young age, clawing its way past an old wound into the world at large. "The name's Ryker."

Jericho glanced around before realizing that the seat he had left was now occupied by the giant of a man who had entered recently. He scowled but turned back to the woman. After another gulp from his cup he managed, "Seems my seat's been taken. Mind if I join you Miss...?"

Sir Gareth Arenar

The look Gareth received did not escape his notice. In truth, he was somewhat surprised - most did not take too kindly to armed strangers. He met her gaze from across the room and nodded, offering another smile.

There seemed to be more than a few armed strangers in this room, come to think of it. People who did not wear the attire of a labourer or farmer, but were instead dressed for the road. He wondered just how much traffic the village actually saw - was such a thing usual? Drink and a rainstorm were already recipes for a miserable mood. Bar brawls occurred more often in stories than in real life, but they were not impossible. Now add weapons into the mix... there was certainly some level of risk.

He shifted his attention back to the barmaid. Those who worked in taverns were often great sources of information, if they could be persuaded, charmed, bribed, intimidated, or otherwise coerced into speaking freely. If there were any dangers on the road ahead, or any opportunities, he needed to know.

"A fine establishment," he said to her she next passed his table, in the accent of a petty noble. "Is it normal to receive this many travelers?" he asked next, in a casual tone of idle curiosity.

“Sir” Barda

Barda lay in bed with his lover. Much to his chagrin, the boy was not in the mood for a good time. Not in that sense. He wanted cuddles, not sex. Barda straddled the boy’s chest. He was out of his armor, and the boy was shirtless.

“Don’t suppose a big strong knight like yourself could escort me to the city, could you?” he asked.

Barda smiled and pulled him closer in the sheets.
“I suppose I could, why?”
Barda guessed. “Villagers can’t stand you, can they, Blake?” Blake nodded. “ They keep calling on the Wraith to give my family inspiration to “bury their shame.” Barda got the meaning.
“Their ‘shame’ being you?”
Blake nodded.

“Pa refuses to do it, ma struck the woman who offered to do it for them with a hammer and ended up in jail for assault. I don’t feel safe here. The city is where I belong.” Blake concluded Barda agreed.
“Being a homosexual is tough. Being a homosexual AND Elwood trash is like being born with unlucky number 13 branded on your forehead for all to see , no?”
Barda asked rhetorically.

“I’ll pay you to take me to Stormbourg.” Blake offered. “With what will you pay me?” Barda asked. There was a pause.

You don’t have anything, do you?
Barda asked with disappointment.” Blake nodded.

One would think that a mercenary who works for no pay won’t make a living as a mercenary, but Barda saw things from another point of view: A person with a bad reputation won’t find work if he doesn’t take jobs for free out of the charity of his heart from time to time. Besides, Blake

would owe him a favor, and a debt for getting him out of this shithole. Barda knew what his answer was.

“I don’t usually work for free,”
Barda said playfully. “I’ll do anything, Rexus, papi” Barda smiled,
"Which is to say you owe me a debt,"
He concluded. “What kind of debt, papi?” Barda tapped his bare hairless chest with his index finger playfully, and fingered his nipple. Barda was finally going to get what he was really after.
“Your mother’s recipe for Silent Agony toxin. I want to learn it. I was told by a villager that she makes sells them to keep Elwood free of rats and even marauders.”
Barda confessed.

Blake nodded. He didn’t care what peculiar habits this “gallant” knight possessed. It was surely innocent. “I’ll get the recipe to you.” Barda was at last satisfied.

In truth, Barda’s reasons for learning the Silent Agony toxin were not innocent. Silent Agony was a rare toxin, banned in all corners of Kaonus, so for his mother to possess a recipe for it was peculiar. Elwood seemed to look the other way, because it kept marauders at bay. The meer presence of the stuff in one's system keeps them paralyzed and unable to make a sound. it keeps them in a never-ending state of agony, as well. The original creator must have been uncreative in his name choice.

It was thus overkill to use on rats. Learning it meant that he had another source of ingredients he could use for a poison, which was useful, since he was going to use it to poison a noble and her family in Starhaven, after he did his usual tricks posing as a gallant knight for them. He was being paid to carry it out, after all, by a curious, and more importantly: rich old man. Probably meant that the old man had a grudge. Which meant that it was an inter-nobility feud. Oddly enough, he still had connections in the nobility, due to his status as former nobility himself.

What made Silent Agony so deadly, was that the ingredients were rare, and very few people know of an antivenom for it due to the poison being banned.

“I have a stop to make in Starhaven first. Then we head north to Stormbourg.”
Barda said. then he kissed Blake good night, pulled up the covers, and pulled himself up to Blake for cuddles. His warm chest rubbing against his.

At least we get more time together.
He thought. He hadn’t had a companion since his days as a knight.

Ryker. Fitting name.

He asked if he could join Eve. She wiped the froth of her mouth, crossed her legs, and gently pat the chair next to her.

Eve seemed to have been luckier than most bargoers this night. Like most travellers, though, she preferred quietness, and then...

The barmaid had returned Gareth's smile, the slightest hint of red to her cheeks in doing so - but carried on serving the patrons. When she finally did pass by him again and heard him speak she paused and smiled appreciatively, the tray in her hands empty for the moment.

" Thank ye', m'daddy built it wit' my grandpa about 28 winters back, " She replied, eyes going from Gareth to the barkeep - who seemed to have noticed the pause and had his eyes on them. The barmaid gave the barkeep a little wave, to which he frowned at slightly before shaking his head - going back to what he was doing. Safe to say his attention wasn't too far, though. The barmaid turned back to Gareth, hand raising to her cheek in thought for a moment. " Not really. We get a'lotta regulars comin' through, couple merchants an' maybe lone travelers here an' there. Prob'ly the storm brought y'all here, right? "

-

The next 30 minutes were quite relaxed, business slowing around the tavern floor as the villagers began making their way back home in varying states of sobriety and the few merchants inside eventually making their way up to their rooms for the night. The teenage barmaid - introducing herself as Feli if Gareth asked - would spend the time doing her rounds and passing by Gareth's table to continue talking with him, if the knight was inclined to do so.

Annie would get her food after perhaps ten minutes, while across the room the young man in the blue cloak pushed his emptied bowl of stew away and sipped at his drink - seeming quite relaxed. The varying lone travelers were soon the only ones still in the room aside from the barmaid and barkeep, with Feli eventually getting down to asking Gareth about where he was from, what he did - seeming interested in their chatter. Her father remained watchful, but kept his distance.

It was a few minutes later that an odd sound meshed in with the rain and thunder. Anyone deeper into the room wouldn't hear it, only those nearer to the door or

Jericho's eyes narrowed as the lady invited him to sit next to her. This was far too welcoming for someone who had just bought her a drink. Without dwelling on it much further, Jericho chose to sit across from Eve, and ultimately ignored any protest or complaint the young woman might have.

Jericho would spend the next minutes asking a couple of questions, such as where she was from and why was she here. If countered with similar questions, he would answer honestly but briefly. It would not take long to figure out that Jericho was trying to gain Eve as an acquaintance rather than any other form of companionship.

Perhaps she would be offended by his disinterest. Maybe she would welcome the change of pace. Either way, it was a means to pass the time in this small town as the darkness lurked overhead waiting for the dawn to come.
