Still on the fence about how to play DA Inquisition again.
I don't like the dwarf's crime background, humans are too boring, elves are way too skinny, and the Qunari... meh.
What I do is add more details to the backstory. For example, My human Was in Loghain's Army at Ostagar and Deserted after Loghain quit the field and fled back to the Free Marches.

So the Darkspawn failed to kill not one but three potential protagonists at Ostagar?

Problem with the human origin is that it's basically like: You are part of the Trevelyan family in Ostwick. They are a devout family and most of their members usually go on to join the Chantry or become Templars. And obviously you aren't a Templar because you aren't taking any lyrium. Doesn't exactly give you room to do anything outside the Free Marches or explain where this skill in combat came from.
They should have put a little more time, effort, and thought into the origins. Why can't my dwarf be a mercenary like the Qunari background? Why can't the Qunari Inquisitor be a former spy/soldier who has gone rogue, and not born outside of Qunari society? Why can't the human mage be an apostate? Why can't the elf be from a city or also in a mercenary company?

Those guys really dropped the ball.
The Warden, The Inquisitor...
Was Hawke at Ostagar?

This is why I believe that Inquisition's take on the backstory is superior, It's vague enough for you to make up your own backstory.
