Knowing the way I usually play Fallout games, I'll probably be a paragon of virtue and build my people mansions while I live in a rusty shack down by the river, or something. The needs of the many. Of course, I could always play an evil character, and be the Jim Jones of Fallout. Communism and Kool-Aid.

I haven't played Fallout before, but I might pick up Fallout 4.

But is there no middle ground where you can give your people the essentials of survival and a few comforts while you yourself still live a good life?

Fallout is all about middle-ground, in my opinion. The choices are usually very grey, and not as cookie-cutter evil/good as in Elder Scrolls games. The choices in New Vegas, to me, all seemed to have their positives and negatives. I usually look at all of the choices and consider the long-term fate of the Wasteland and the people, and pick the best one, since I always try to play a good character first-off. Like, you have multiple factions in New Vegas, and even the 'Evil' faction has some degree of positives if it should win out over the others, and the head honcho of the 'evil' faction has his own reasons for his actions. Likewise, the 'good' faction has inherent flaws. Ultimately, I went with the good faction, but later took actions to limit their power over New Vegas and the Mojave.

As a result, however, I basically became a Libertarian war-profiteer, so that was pretty unforeseen.

If you like RPGs at all, which I assume you do, since you're here, you'd probably like the Fallout series.

Hey, guys. I've not been in a good mood at all lately. Got some slightly scary news on Thursday, and I've been fighting with my closest friends for a few days now. Plus I haven't been sleeping well at all. Just an update on my life, I guess. I'm not sure anyone cares, though, since I don't contribute here much anymore. :/

I care, and not just because I've been reading the Fault in our Stars.

I can't think of a proper character for this. Someone give me a gimmick and I'll work from there.

My character goes for sneak kills and reputation exploits to maintain on good terms with everybody. O_o How might one characterise that?

I'm not sure, I'd say your character would be like a spy, in that case, or a double agent. Nobody ever actually sees your character kill/harm anyone, and he/she would work with different groups, often against another group's interests, then, reap the benefits of the groups that have been exploited.

I used to play my characters in Fallout/Skyrim as sort of mercenaries. I based it off of The Man with No Name from Clint Eastwood's westerns. He just wants his money. Gradually that just phased into being the hero of the land, but I usually do multiple playthroughs with different characters anyway.

The thing that I like most about Fallout is that it actually gives you some pretty deep moral quandaries if you really read into the situation and what you're tasked with doing. Like, in New Vegas, you could make an argument for the worthiness of every possible ending. In Fallout 3, one of the last choices in the primary quest actually makes you think beforehand. Evil and good are more grey than black and white in all of those games.

Really? the biggest moral dilemma I've found in New Vegas goes along the lines of "Do I have reason to pull the trigger, and will shooting this guy put me in
[Danger]
?".

I'm in it for the skirmishes; the big picture be damned. :P

Stormcloaks. I've always had a soft spot in my heart for rebels.

Even if those rebels fight for barbaric customs? Like how you can become King just by walking into the current king's palace and beating him to a pulp? Then there's the fact that Empire is a more stabilizing force - not only does it offer military and economic benefits to Skyrim, but it is also the only force unifying the humans of Tamriel at the moment. Also the Stormcloak's racism, Ulfric's ties to the Thalmor (though to what extent, we may never know), their crappy jarls, and their belief that they can take on the Aldmeri Dominion single-handedly only a few years after coming out of a violent civill war?

Though I will concede that many of Skyrim's other choices are pretty black and white.
