Ehh, the demons could have merit stamps - for each "wish" they grant, they're one step closer to freedom. Only, you don't know how many merits a demon actually needs - so every wish could potentially backfire with an emasculated demon tearing you apart.

Freeing a demon with every wish just seems... wasteful.

I'm thinking these demons will be more honor-bound and business-like. Sure, you may be temporarily enslaving them, and they are evil by nature, but you are also granting them passage into your world and giving them a chance to cause genuine chaos.

Plus, if demons killed every person who summoned them then nobody would want to summon them.

In fact, I'm thinking that this is something the demons willingly set up in order to give people more incentive to summon them.

Well, in my own mythos, demons can "live" within the memories and dreams of people, and take form as a spirit, and then the spirit grows into a body. But some demons only exist in or as dreams/nightmares, and can then be summoned from the dreamworld into reality through the dreamer. My demons tend to be diverse and have multiple ways to enter realms or people's bodies, so maybe different types or kinds of demons would work the best?

Lasky, at this point, we can go into the idea of patrons within the world.

As such, it could very well be that in order to gain a magical gift, someone with magic must summon a patron for you to bond to. That patron grants you some of their power, on the condition that those powers be used to advance their goals in the mortal realm. In this sense, a mortal gains magical powers and the patron advances their interest in a realm where they usually would have no influence.

Therefore initiation into the service of a patron requires someone to intercede on your behalf or for the patron to find some special means of contacting you with the deal, the latter being the way the first mages were created.

More passive patrons may not have grand motives, just certain rules they put in place about their powers usage. Demons and Angels might require you to perform evil and good deeds, respectively, with their powers. Failure to do so means you no longer have access to the power.

In your magic system, I would suggest having it be to where the patron empowers the blood of the subject. As such, unforgivable transgressions could lead to all the mana-charged blood to simply be used, ultimately killing the caster.
Cower, worship, or beg. All are valid choices.

That's actually a pretty interesting idea, Quick. Although I'm not going to include Angels in my thread's mythos. Or if I do, they will only be heard of in legends - in this world, even though most people devoutly worship their gods they aren't 100% proven to exist.

But yeah, I do like the idea. You summon a demon and that demon grants you magic, but you are then forced to carry out that demon's bidding or else it kills you.

Demons don't necessarily require magic to summon, though. You get a bunch of ingredients (mage blood, blood of an innocent, some plants and monster parts, etc) and burn them in the middle of a pentagram or something like that. But you need magic to bind them.

Yeah, I was thinking of different types of demons.

You would get the standard demon, big and tall with horns and whatnot.

There are possession demons, who are more like spirits and can take control of a human's body. Though they have no real power other than that, they are almost impossible to detect. But if possession demons have no real power, then summoning them for a wish is a bit pointless.

Maybe I should drop the wish thing and just say people summon demons to acquire magic or enslave them? And there's always a chance that they will summon a demon too powerful for them to bind or they would have made some mistake in the ritual.

Then I would include imps and hellhounds, easier to summon and bind but not as powerful as other demons.
