Lasky, at this point, we can go into the idea of patrons within the world.
As such, it could very well be that in order to gain a magical gift, someone with magic must summon a patron for you to bond to. That patron grants you some of their power, on the condition that those powers be used to advance their goals in the mortal realm. In this sense, a mortal gains magical powers and the patron advances their interest in a realm where they usually would have no influence.
Therefore initiation into the service of a patron requires someone to intercede on your behalf or for the patron to find some special means of contacting you with the deal, the latter being the way the first mages were created.
More passive patrons may not have grand motives, just certain rules they put in place about their powers usage. Demons and Angels might require you to perform evil and good deeds, respectively, with their powers. Failure to do so means you no longer have access to the power.
In your magic system, I would suggest having it be to where the patron empowers the blood of the subject. As such, unforgivable transgressions could lead to all the mana-charged blood to simply be used, ultimately killing the caster.
Cower, worship, or beg. All are valid choices.
