If Caesar's Legion can thrive in post apocalyptic USA by emulating the Roman Empire, I see no flaw in a return to Brutal Feudalism. Those who earn my pride and trust may be invited to thrive within my protection, but until then, they will remain on the outskirts of my lab. Cower, worship, or beg. All are valid choices.

So, I feel as though I've got the basics of how magic works in my world.

Now there's just the question of how demons fit in. Can't have a fantasy thread without demons.

Right now I'm thinking that people summon a demon via ritual, and then that demon must grant them one request in order to gain its freedom. Pretty basic stuff, I know.

The question is, do I make it so you have the power to summon a specific demon, or just have a random demon come through each time? Like, a portal opens up in the demon world and whichever one happens to come through first is the one you must make a deal with. You can end up with a demon strong enough to overpower your wards or too weak to grant your request.

Ehh, the demons could have merit stamps - for each "wish" they grant, they're one step closer to freedom. Only, you don't know how many merits a demon actually needs - so every wish could potentially backfire with an emasculated demon tearing you apart.

Freeing a demon with every wish just seems... wasteful.
