Deadman Wonderland is an anime, yes. It's one of those "like it or hate it" sort of animes, with overexaggerated violence, blood and gore... and the dumbest justice system known to man. How did a 14 year old kid smear the walls with his classmates with no weapon or motive? Doesn't matter, GUILTY, DEATH ROW WITHOUT CHANCE FOR RETRIAL.

To make despair work, I think you need hope - the expectation that things can get better. Otherwise, you're just left with flat depression. In that sense, I think your "corruption" idea would be a lot more appealing and open ended.

Ooo, the recent Ogre Kingdoms reveal trailer for the upcoming Warhammer Total War game looks swell:

This gave me an idea: how about an RP based on this trailer, of which we roleplay as various unlucky victims who are soon to be snacks for Ogres. We'd have to escape our doomy imprisonment, fight to freedom, then flee our rather husky captors. We'd later regroup possibly find other allies or powers, then fend off pursuers once and for all.

What I find funny yet scary about Warhammer Ogres, is that they're basically oversized, violent children who just run around eating people. Just imagine if they were real >.< sometimes, the simplest, most childish things are the scariest!
