Actually, come to think of it, Lana literally has no reason to kill the stowaway.
Unless she finds Jerard she can't prove he is a necromancer. And aside from scaring the crew he hasn't interfered with the voyage at all or tried to harm anyone on it. Considering they have taken in both Annie and Inferi's character, the worst I see them doing to him is beating him to an inch of his life and throwing him in the brig.
Nah, Byman would behead him for stowing away on a military voyage. The only reason he didn't kill Annie is because she is a child.

Actually, as far as I can tell, there's nothing about a Mage being able to tell who else is a Mage by looking at magical energy surrounding somebody. DEFINITELY no way to tell what kind of magic they practice either.
Perhaps not, but aren't mages very sensitive to magical energies? It is no matter if they aren't. I'm going by my imagination because different people have different ideas about the same RP. Based on my own personal imagination, mages are able to sense the magical energies that surround them, and others; and the more powerful a mage is, the more sensitive he is to magical energies. For example, if a mage comes across a set of ruins that are haunted or have some sort of magical anomaly, and they are nearby, they will be able to sense the anomaly, If a mage comes across another mage, they would be able to sense the energy surrounding the mage, after which they can reasonably guess that they are a mage. As far as telling what type of mage he is, maybe that is just a matter of spying, but as I said A mage is very perceptive of the invisible energies that surround a particular mage. Nin would be no exception, except that he is a master of his particular school of magic, he would be very sensitive to another mage's mere presence and would not be fooled if he tried to masquerade as a soldier. This sense would be universal amongst all mages and develops as he masters his school. which brings me to the second part of my personal imaginative lore. (Really Venom made no mention of the sensitivities of mages when he Made TLK, so this just leaves it to personal imagination as far as I am concerned) Different schools of magic have different magical energies, so it is possible to guess what type of mage he/ she is, but he can only guess, there is no definitive way to tell as some spells from other schools derive energies from different schools of magic. that is just my personal imagination.

and the reason they can sense magical energies is because they command them.
edit: This is just my personal lore, If It is decided that Nin cannot do that, then I will revert to whatever lore Venom has in mind.

Zed on ITF posseses this skill,
but usually I'm too lazy to use it
but I wrote it as if it was an uncommon ability, i.e. most mages couldn't identify another mage this way. I assume the standard fantasy principles are that you can feel magic from an extreme end of the spectrum, like demonic magic, and on the other end, like holy or angelic magic, but in-between would be normal mortal magic that everyday mages use that doesn't really stand out. Of course there would be tools and techniques for detecting magic and stuff.
And I'm starting to feel a bit better, though that just might be my 3-day weekend.
