I had no idea.
A buckler with a hefty spike could indeed punch through mail, it may have difficulty puncturing the gambeson underneath, tho (assuming there was gambeson/padding worn under the mail). Basically, any spike or stiff tip can potentially split mail links (even if riveted), and any hefty edge such as that of an axe or two-handed sword can also do the same.
