Inferi, about phoenix
Ah, OK, so that's how it goes: you want a phoenix that transforms into a human, not the other way around. I'd never notice.
Rniya, about the timeline/age
OK, np. Not that I'll remember, but there we go!
About dwarves being backwards,
If realism is to be taken into account, naturally-stocky peoples would mean very short women. It would be dangerous for a woman to walk around where everyone's like three feet taller than her. She would be an easy target for highwaymen, rampaging soldiers, slavers, etc. Back in ancient times, women stayed at home mostly for safety.
There are some exceptions. In Eastern Europe, Scythians, Sarmatians, Slavs, Vandals, and possibly Huns, had female warriors much more often than Western Europeans, possibly because a woman on horseback has a good chance of surviving enemy horsemen, being lighter, the horse has less weight to worry about. In some Scythian, Sarmatian and Slavic tribes, by law, a woman had to kill at least one enemy before she could marry (hence why East Europeans today tend to be more open to violence and conflict).
When the Middle Ages arrived, people became taller and healthier, and heavily-armoured women began to appear in artwork ('armoured ladies'), in both military conflict and travelling. How often armoured women actually fought or adventured is unclear, but they were probably rare. Noblewomen were also known to defend their castles, just like female nobles and samurai women in feudal Japan.
