Huh, everyone else seems to be gone. Well, suppose I shouldn't be surprised. We're getting older and we have grown up stuff to do, after all. No one can stay a kid forever.

So, ya, just wanted to stop by. Well then, I take it it's just Delta and Annie? What have you two been up to?

*sighs*
ok I guess.
Job hunting atm.
Thanksgiving to New Year's isn't the best time frame to have gotten laid off. (logistics more than anything else as a lot of the folks who make the hiring decisions are either on holiday/vacation or scrambling to cover things until the end of the year)

Annie,
Yeah, that would be nice. I also forgot about rpplus, I'll see if Atarashi posted yet.

Delta,
Sorry to hear you got laid-off. I was dealing with long-term unemployment for like half a year in Canada. Had no choice but to live with my dad, but I used my savings to buy a wood stove, so we get free heat and free cooking. Seems like everything's getting harder and worser nowadays.

I went on vacation, but am also job hunting, but in Texas! I would like to see if I can get an H2B or H2A work visa. Why not? But ya, busy time of year, and it's harder to get a job. My Texan friend has not replied to my emails since Christmas, not sure why. I hope she's doing alright. Would like to see her a third time at least sooner or later.

It's ok Azi.
Left a previous job April 2017. What I thought I was and what the industry thought I was were 2 completely different things. Took 4 months to find what I did find knowing it was technically a step down from what I did, but at the same time realizing that if I want to be a Quality Engineer for the rest of my professional future, I needed to do 'something' at the associate level again to really get my foot in the door elsewhere down the road.
The lay off wasn't totally unexpected. The Engineering team I was a part of didn't have a whole lot for me to do. Plus the other thing they were cross training me for, the guy didn't retire yet (I technically had 2 bosses). I think if they talked to him first, he might have accelerated his retirement.
The flipside: I wasn't planning to be there "too long". I didn't really like it there. And when my boss and the HR person were there, I was expecting a reprimand on "something AND good probability of being let go anyways.
Given the ownership personality and general employee turnover rate, my departure wouldn't have been missed too much.

I'm looking for Quality Engineering (Hardware, not Software) or Tech Writing.
Yes, the job market is there.

At the same time, things have cooled a bit.
The "trade war" with China has been going on since early Summer. We're now starting to see the first serious ripple effects. (Prices. Stock market dip. Earnings for a few major companies reports show them being DOWN.) And for someone trying to get/stay in the electronics industry, especially with China being a major hub for it, it can leave one a little leary.

The other side of it as what I'm applying for. Not a whole lot of 0-5 year QE positions.
Plus kinda need to get off my rear and finish one thing to help my credentials in the application process. So sort of shot myself in the foot there.

I know it can be depressing as heck to job hunt.
Did it for a while after graduating college.
Went quite a while at 1 place. Heard about an open slot but got hired as an intern. They made me an associate engineer.
Laid off. Job hunt lasted about a week. (Laid off on a friday. Applied to several spots. Had 3 interviews and accpeted the first real 1 to come along.)
Was at that place a while.
Left.
Spent 4 months hunting.
Took previous employer as an opportunity and "retraining".
Laid off.
Hunt again now in month 2.

Like I said. Most of that has been due to holiday time.

These days compared to previous generations, a lot of your applications are blindly spamming online job posts with your resume mathematically tailored to match their automated keyword searches.

I've found it's easier to get in at smaller places because they actually read the resumes rather than larger organizations (ie Lockheed, Raytheon, TI) who due to their size, end up with some of it getting autofiltered before someone looks at it (assuming whomever requested the job posting in the first place is still there to look at it. I've still got submissions up from mid-2017 that are still "active" in their databases.)

Oh my, that's quite the job story Delta! Heh, you and your employer thought you were something different than expected...oops. So, you're a hardware engineer, very impressive. I can't really do anything, so I remain uneducated and seek entry level jobs mostly. But ya, at least you moved on. Why bother with a job you don't like? I did that for a few years then got fired after I got angry at my superiors, and lost half my pension; far better to quit before getting angry!

Yeah, lots of issues with China. Let's hope the Trump Administration will finish their shutdown and get things underway ASAP.

Oh my, even though you're an engineer, you still can't get a job? That really sucks. I hope you have some sort of unemployment insurance or something to keep going when out of work!

Hm, I have little luck with online application. When I got full-time work at a minor lumber mill, I got it the old-fashioned way, which seems to be the best. I sent my resumes via Indeed to several employers hiring in Tyler, TX, so I am hoping that's a start for my H2B visa, if it works out. If not, I'll live in my car and enjoy a big, long vacation, because I was going crazy at home.

But yeah, I also read on a US government site that you are more likely to be accepted for a visa in a smaller city or more rural area. Seems like the bigger the city/establishment/company, the more shortcuts there are. I like Tyler very much, people here are nice.

Hopefully, things will turn out good!

Part of the process is "how you sell yourself" in an interview. Needless to say, my interviewing skills are .... poor.
1st job was because dad knew the guy and I knew which end of the soldering iron was hot.
2nd job was I was still "raw" and young and engineering manager (At the time) didn't want to waste me as a tech (2 months in, he left .... )
3rd job, was still "young" and I didn't have much expectations. I left because the woman they hired as the QA Mgr ... I didn't have any issues with what she was trying to do professionally. Everything was ... personal. (She was passive agressive, micromanging, she would call you over for a "quick meeting" while on the phone with her college age son and force me to wait until that call was over to have our meeting.) She was hired for her Software QA background. My former employer was still hardware based, but was gradually adding more and more software apps ... not my area. I was told "she'd handle Software, I'd handle the hardware stuff, and we'd help where there was overlap or need." She gradually started trying to get more and more into the Hardware/operations side. After 8 months, she basically had me try to distill 2-4 years of Electrical Engineering education to her in 45 minutes. When it didn't sink in and try to repeat it to explain an issue. I was done with her. (in hindsight, should have finished out the day, went thru the 3 day weekend. The next Monday turn in 2 week notice. That way, I'd have gotten my 9 days of PTO left paid out to me.)
Last job I took was because I knew how bad off I really was.
