One advantage of not referencing others' posts, is that it allows each reader to imagine what happens however one wishes. Can't be everywhere all the time, after all.

The downside is that it makes users feel like their posts aren't being read, or that what they write doesn't matter, and in that case: why even participate?

Part of the responsibility is on the user to make sure that what they write matters, but if their character is doing something that should be noticed, then it is the responsibility of the other roleplayers to acknowledge it in a post (assuming their own characters are actually in a position to react to it, of course.)

This actually happens a lot in conversations irl; you say things, only for them to be ignored, glossed over or forgotten. If anything, I would say any fictional conversation that involves dead ends are more realistic.

I don't think every post needs a direct response, especially if characters have no reason to awnser.

I feel like physical interactions are the ones that more likely need a response than verbal. Most people - and if the character is not in the majority, I guess this just wouldn't apply - won't have absolutely no reaction if someone attempts top physically interact with them. Words? Sure, those can be missed or ignored. Someone coming up and trying to punch you? That can't really just be thought of as nothing. Done in by the dubious doings of destiny.

But if someone is standing only two feet away from you and yelling, you're going to notice. And you don't necessarily have to have your character verbally or physically respond to everything, but there needs to be some acknowledgement that it is happening, even if it's "Character A could not think of a way to respond to that, so he said nothing."

Yeah, but you should respond if possible. Just ignoring other posts isn't a good idea when it directly references your character.
Of course, yes, that’s better. I try to do this as often as possible, but I think users don’t really care.

NotFishing,
This was always something that pops in my mind. In my case, I try to prove I am reading everyone’s posts, and try to at least reference them in some way to show it, in whatever way I can. I can’t always do it, tho. Recently, for example, I was unable to get Griselda into much interaction, but I am planning to mention she saw Zensira’s sue of magic affecting the water, seeing as Griselda’s already overlooking the sea.

Exactly, all your points are spot-on here.

West,
Yeah, that happened all the time for me. Seemed like nobody cared what I had to say, or were never interested in what I liked. But that’s their choice, too.

Inferi,
That’s a good point for sure. Physical interactions matter. Some matter don’t care about comments, after all. I am kinda like that, insults, comments, and yapping don’t affect me much.

I will try to post later tonight.

XD That made me chuckle, West. If you're having problems with bios, maybe base it off a picture? There's lots of imgur images about fantasy characters, and that's basically the main reason I can create rather lots of bios. But, if it's a writing problem, try incorporating some tragedy or negativity into the bio' backstory, but make sure to work with it as a reason for the character's mentality. This is what I did for Griselda, and she's one of my favorite bios yet.
