Alright, just so everyone is aware: firearms do exist, primarily in the form of pistols - anything larger, like a rifle or a blunderbus, is experimental.
Only the dwarves have them, but the army has yet to adopt them in large numbers. The army still overwhelmingly favors crossbows. As a result, firearms are mostly carried by wealthy individuals.
Also worth noting: the reliance on handheld ranged weapons (including crossbows) isn't particularly respectable. It is not viewed as something that requires a large amount of skill or bravery.
The Royal Guard keeps a few crossbowmen and gunmen just to have a bit of versatility, but they aren't held on the same level of respect as the others, and are still expected to hold their own in melee combat, in addition to already being a crack shot with their ranged weapon.
Beneath the gold, the Bitter Steel.
