You can wallow in your own pain as much as you want, but when it drags everyone else into the stinking pile of shit with you I have a bit of an issue with it. Done in by the dubious doings of destiny.

I dunno, wallowing in ones pain is a common cause, but not the only cause of why a character wouldn't want to involve themselves. I mean, if one didn't care about world peace, I feel a character might be forgiven for treating this like an extended hunting holiday - it sounds better than fighting paramilitary at least.
