When it comes to medieval threads, I always get stuck at the clothing section. I mean, every time I go to a medieval fair, I begin to think the Celts had the right idea running around in the nude. Surely nobody would sensibly travel or fight in 3 layers of clothes, long cloaks AND dresses (both sexes) - but I also know that skin was largely taboo (for obvious reasons).

I have a basic idea of what I want to do (a kitsune spirit and a shrine maiden), but not entirely sure how to make it all fit into the threads standard rpg lore.

Ah, well. I'll give it another shot later.

There would be a layer of thick quilted cloth or boiled leather, covered by a layer of chainmail, then a layer of metal plate, and finally some sort of surcoat or a cloak to help allies identify you. And that was basically your ideal protection, at least when it came to fighting.

Ideal protection, yes. Nicely insulated, comfortable, easy to put on and won't trip you up when you run or hinder your movements? Yeah, not so much.

-sigh- maybe I'm just too soft.

Armor actually isn't as encumbering as you think, provided it fits correctly. People have done cartwheels in it.

Insulation? You're covered head to toe.

Comfortable? You're in battle, so you likely won't even notice.

I'm not talking about armour though - I'm talking about clothing you'd want to travel in between villages or simply for foraging through the woods.

I have a distinction between safety gear and clothing :P It's technically wrong, but IRL reasons necessitate it.

Well, you also said fight...

As for travel - realistically, people wouldn't be wearing that many layers of clothing if it was hot out. Unless they're nobility, in which case they're more concerned with fashion than practicality, and likely won't be doing much traveling anyways. And if they do, they'll have a carriage.

The people at those medieval fairs are probably overdressing.

...One time, I was sprinting in armour. Wore a mail shirt, cuirass, pauldrons, vambraces, greaves, gauntlets, and helmet. And I nearly tripped, on absolutely nothing, barely managed to not fall. I think I lost balance/was off-balanced by the weight of my armour. I would have looked quite silly.

That doesn't make much sense, considering the weight would be distributed evenly across your body. I take it the armor wasn't a perfect fit? I also take it you don't do that sort of thing regularly?

I've never worn armor myself but I have watched videos of people being agile with it, and I like to think I'm fairly well-read on it as well.

This whole "armor/swords are slow and heavy" myth was created because the people with 'experience' in those matters did not use them on a regular basis.
