(This also applies to your recently bumped "Hug of Destiny" thread. I liked it. :P )

Hm, never understood why users do that, but that's what happened every single time in RolePlayGateway. Like, why spend the time making a bio, and then not doing much with it after a while.

I imagine it's the similar to making a character in a game like Skyrim. You spend 2 hours in character creation and begin your concept, until you put the controller down and think... "hey, I got a better idea". Or real life keeps you so busy you forget what the concept was in the first place.

And then you delete all your saves and start again a couple of weeks later.

It's a vicious cycle.

Go ahead and do the next turn without me, Azi. The Void, mortal enemy of the Cosmos, has clouded my mind temporarily.
Ok George, I will try to post in WU tonight. I could do it now, but I need to do research for immigration work.

Good points, West, as always. I sometimes have that problem in Skyrim, I just don't know which character to play as, and I can't ever find one that I like. Turns out playing as my Argonian Demonica worked just fine. I can still pretend she's actually demon! I wonder if there's a Skyrim mod where Argonians get wings and can breathe fire.
...and then in Dark Souls, you can actually be a dragon, without wings -.-

As for deleting saves and restarting, there's something very alluring with the first day of gameplay in games. In the Dark Souls series, I never had this problem, but in Skyrim, I rather liked restarting. Skyrim has a magical first several hours, as does Dark Souls 1 and Mass Effect 1, though I have not yet been able to figure out why. I think it's the feel of something totally new and different.

In writing, especially professional writing, people don't want to read stories about something new, they don't want to feel lost. Indeed, professional editors will try to stop reading your work if the very first sentence is uninteresting. But, ignorance into adventure works very well in gaming. Dead Space and Bioshock did this very well.

I feel my analogy didn't link to my point, and I feel we've had this discussion before. :P

The conclusion (I) reached long ago was that people didn't want to read original work for originalities sakes; they wanted works that have a new take on a common subject to which they can relate.

It's the same as going to a "modern art" museum. I mean, sure, the art is original... but so is the scrunched up chocolate bar wrapper in my pocket. And do you think people pay me to see said wrapper that has been scrunched "originally"? No, I throw it in the bin.

I think Professional Editors have a point - a production is the same as a speech. People may remember bits and pieces from the middle, and some people will dedicate their life to picking the work apart. But for the casual viewer, it's the beginning and the end that will have the biggest effect on how they view it.

This is why I believe Mass Effect was the "perfect" RPG franchise - it had strong beginnings and strong endings in all 3 games, even when it had weak content like the Mako or long loading screens sandwiched in the middle.

West,
Ha! Well, your points usually are good, they make me think, that’s for sure.

You’re right, we somewhat did have this conversation before, I kinda forgot about that. But oh well, I can talk about it again, why not?

Yes, you are right. People don’t want originality for originality’s sake, they want something relatable with a few twists here and there. This is why we have cliches: most people are not artists, and so it is, the average person can only relate to art via cliches. Indeed, from personal experience, I noticed that the more someone complains about cliches, the more likely they are to be banal-minded.

Ha! Modern art, and a scrunched up chocolate wrapper, yeah, both are quite original. I’m not a fan of modern art, tho artists involved are free to do what they wish.

Indeed, the element of speech is an actual tool, or feature, in literature. However, nowadays, only two things matter: what your work can sell, or what popularity your work can produce. Nothing else matters. This is why some authors use YouTube and other social media outlets to advertise their art. After all, the author oneself is also a medium for sales and popularity. Some people are genetically gifted, and so are capable of success. And yes, the beginning and the ending are very important.

Ha, yeah, the Mass Effect trilogy is definitely one of the greatest out there, and it could have been better. Always wondered why the Mass Effect teams were not given the time they needed. I liked the Mako, tho, even tho it went crazy half the time.

I will try to post the turn in Wake Up tonight, but so far, things are slow. My brother wants to play For Honor tonight, so I'll have to do that first.
