I'm currently busy searching google to see if there any historical sign or signal that says, "DON'T SHOOT, I JUST WANNA KILL YOUR LEADER IN AN HONOURABLE 1v1"
No results thus far, but I'm optimistic.
Throw a glove at them.
Meanwhile, on the observation deck...
Soldier #1: "OMG, CAP'N, TAKE A LOOK AT THIS! THEY GONE AND THREW A GLOVE AT US!"

I think I'm missing one...
Who.
And When.
Both are irrelevant.

Yeah, but then you have to deal with messy affairs like seconds. Throwing down a glove doesn't quite have the visual flare I want from a couple of hundred meters away, and is difficult to perform when you aren't even viewing the person you want to duel.

EDIT: To anyone who objects to sending a 13 year old girl into a warzone because she can't do anything, try watching this.

Well, at least being small means you're harder to be shot.
As for duels, they happened, even during battle, as late as the Napoleonic Wars, usually at the start, before the start, or sometime near or after the end of major conflicts.
The good ol' Japs and European epics seemed fond of single combat too. The problem is, from what I can see, such events are negotiated beforehand in good faith.

Indeed! It must have been so epic, for two armies to watch their greatest warriors duel between the two forces.

I kind of wish dueling were still allowed. It would solve a lot of problems.
Hm, duelling did historically result in rather lots of injury and occasional death.
For example, in Poland, a duel was legal until a doctor had to stop the stop, with rules specifically stating that it did not matter how much blood, injuries or screaming occurs, only the doctor could stop the fight. This resulted in the deaths of many Polish nobles.
During the Victorian Era, there were duels of boxing, and death did occur not uncommonly, when the one knocked out hit his head against the sidewalk. Women also dueled with swords.
But ya, I think dueling should be brought back, but only in an appropriate environment, such as a boxing or MMA ring, with all necessary protective gear, of course.
Oh, and I will post in APTtS later tonight.
