Pretty much, it's like a non opiate opioid though so it doesn't actually have the nasty effects that your standard opium derivatives do. Lots of people have gotten off of heroin/pills and various other substances with it, and many people have found pretty good success using it for depression, anxiety and chronic pain. It tastes terrible though.
