It's wet and cold. If Annie curled up and went to sleep right this second, I think she'd likely die of exposure.

That isn't to say she couldn't or shouldn't be tired. Children don't have the stamina of healthy adults, after all.

Option A) They got lost in the woods while wandering off in the woods for a reason that would seem silly in hindsight, happening upon an abandoned cabin which is then besieged upon by a pack of intelligent whatever’s. Through a mix of nerdery and badassery, they managed to hold out for the night before the adults arrive on the scene, find the cabin fire and wonder "WTF IS GOING ON".

Option A point 1) They got kidnapped by bandits while wandering off in the woods for a reason that would seem silly in hindsight. They managed to score a triple kill in “self-defence” before the adults arrive on the scene, find all the bodies and wonder "WTF IS GOING ON".

... I'm open for ideas. Or we could leave it as a noodle incident. Let them alien's examining the internet 50,000 years from now figure it out.

How high-ranking/well-known was Bridgett's father, exactly?

Imagine this: There are two highborn children under one roof. Their fathers are both high-ranking respected military officers, and are currently away fighting a war. The estate is probably lightly guarded due to the following facts: A) The Arenars are not overly wealthy, B) many of the guards joined the army, and C) the family is reluctant to hire more because increased wartime taxes are putting a strain on the budget.

If Verania has some sort of intelligence agency, perhaps they tried to capture the two kids in order to gain some leverage over their fathers?

I'll admit, it's not perfect. And we'll probably need to ask Inferi about the plausibility of some of these details. Beneath the gold, the Bitter Steel.
