I... regret to inform you guys that the anime I listed before actually peaked my interest in teenage and young adult spies in a steampunk setting. It was actually quite interesting to see a lot of the ideas that Annie has been using over the years expanded upon.

A few notable examples:

~ One of the characters has a "scientist" father, who replaces his daughter's voice box with a sound mechanism that can imitate voices or sounds. Why? Because he could. (He was arrested prior to the story).

~ Two of the characters share Annie's general personality trait set, whereby they want to help... but end up getting in trouble because they are often in over their heads. It doesn't help that they lack the training of the other girls.

~ Although she is a bit older than your average Annie, one of the girls is a dedicated combatant and ninja. Namely, she can swipe bullets out of the air with her Katana. Although, she comes from a tough japanese family where such things are not only expected, but mundane.

~ They work for a spy organisation called the "black -insert name here-". It is a bit different in that the group works as an actual cell structure that communicates either directly or indirectly with their nations military command structure. Their job is also clear - to find important targets and smuggle them over the wall (or eliminate them).

Damn. If only I had seen this while Broken World was still a thing! So many ideas to plagiarise!

... That ship has sailed! :P

Broken world wouldn’t work, I think, since the thread wasn’t designed with cell-structures or behind-the-scenes plays in mind (as far as I could tell). A lot of it was player driven, and I don't think a spy's employers should be left out of the loop or have no interests of their own in the plot.

I guess what I'm saying is that you can't simply spring a spy network on a thread and expect the GM to roll with it, since the information network is a big plot point for a spy. Without knowledge of the world outside of the plot (or the plot outside of the story), I don't think a roleplayer would have sufficient detail to control such a faction.

For such a thread, we would need a static setting. Spies, I feel, are effective because they have identities in the community, and can therefore deflect suspicion.

Ha, interesting summaries there, West. It is kinda funny that there are anime Annies out there. But yes, the theme of spies do require quite a lot of background details and plots to flow, and since my RPs tend to focus on the players, and driving the RP via the players, it's not easy to have a spy theme. I did do some pre-work with Joe's Black Hand, meaning I take control of it and do what I want with it, and the idea of using armoured gangsters was kinda cool. I loved the vehicle chase scene, I wish we had more of those. In Titanomachy, I did that with Annie, and intend to do something similar with various types of combat ships from Warhammer, Halo and Mass Effect, if I can. I just thought it was cool to have an airborne vehicle chase through a Warp-struck Mars. Of course, once we get to the Halo, there'll be Warthog chases, too! ...unless the thread dies.

Anyways, as a reminder, I want to wait for my new computer to arrive before continuing Titanomachy's Collector subplot. In case something happens, I could always copy-paste the posts, transfer them onto the old computer with a USB stick, then continue the work there.

Personality:

In this thread, simply staing “you’re a good listener” won’t do. I don’t want fence sitters, I want CHARACTERS. To this end, I would like to base our characters on the “five temperament” model, which was once common in historical psychology and still pops up in media today.

Temperaments aren’t concrete – they are simply personality guidelines.

Supine
means “lying down”. Those under this temperament often seek to help others for no other reward than their own self-gratification. Whether they are a saint or a martyr is anyone’s guess. A supine fears the rejection of others, and often suffers low self-esteem as a result.

Sanguine
means “blood”, the life source of the body. Those under this temperament are bouncy and excitable, and feel most at home around the gossip mill. While a Sanguine seeks the attentions of others, they also fear the rejection or scorn of others.

Melancholy
is a feeling, a really depressing one. Those under this temperament are often down to earth, modest, conscientious of others and pay a fine attention to detail. A melancholic is strong in the face of a known threat, but fears the unknown. This fear makes it hard for them to open up to others.

Choleric
means “bile”, the gunk that comes from your liver. Choleric people are driven by strong passions and ideals, and most often like to bulldoze over complications in a most straightforward manner. Choleric temperaments often fear a lack of control over their lives, and their fiery tempers can often lead to unforeseen complications later down the line.

Phlegm
is the stuff that comes out of your nose. As their name would imply, those who are classified as Phlegmatic are great at following the flow. They are rational thinkers at heart, though they often fear distinguishing themselves or standing out in any way.
