Come to think about it, what was Gareth's childhood like? If we go with the idea that she stayed for four months (and presumably visited since), what has happened between them?
He mostly just read books and acted like your typical introvert.
I imagine his parents likely would have forced him to talk to her, but the only way to maintain a long conversation with Gareth is if you debate him on a subject he is well-informed or interested in.
Also he's very ill-mannered.

If we say that Bridgett hates to lose on any front, a typical red headed trait, then I'm sure she would have studied hard to try and match Gareth's knowledge. I don't imagine her knowledge outside of military doctorine would be all that vast, but she is at least informed about the outside world - in no small part thanks to Gareth.
I think this could be a sort of "redeeming feature" in their friendship.
EDIT: I'm going to post on titano soon, but I imagine Shirley is going to have to be left behind. While portrayed as a simple "paperweight", I'm 99.98% sure that the Kataphrakt's cover fire is preventing the less distracted Chaos Marines from getting a clear shot.
The question is, what happens afterwards? I'm getting some bad Halo: Reach vibes here...
