I’ve been reading through the fate system. I like what I’ve read so far about Fate, but have yet to delve into the actual mechanics.

I've noticed a cumulative list of player spells in a certain someone's bio. I'll allow for it, but I’m not all that fond of post-limit-enforced “spell-cooldowns” myself. At present, I would much prefer if this was either handled by the roleplayer or by an exhaustive mechanic, whereby spell success is proportional to the relative time period between spells. We probably won't use such a system in First Fantasy (yet), but it might be in the cards.

From what I've read of Fate, I like it a lot. I too need to finish reading it, though :/

His was based on an X-casts per day mechanic, which is even more Vancian. A post-based cooldown system would be actually a pretty Forum-y solution, though balance would be... difficult. Basically, having magic have rules involves making a lot of rules.

From my admittedly not extensive research, Vancian magic works really well to make one specific feel of wizard, where magic is powerful, rare, often dangerous to use, and used by people who gravitate to cleverness and trickery than by brute force (knowing which spells to prepare, when to use them). Additionally, In the writings of Jack Vance, his wizards were still capable characters even when they had expended all their spells. Meanwhile, D&D turned spellcasters into artillery; their incredible power is balanced by extreme weaknesses in most other situations, and when they ran out of ammunition, they were mostly useless.

Oftentimes on these forums, magic tends to be relatively common, especially by player characters (even in worlds where it should be rare), and less powerful, and while most magic tires out characters, it doesn't have the capacity to backfire on the caster completely. And we still have the power level problem of casters vs. non casters. Huh.

I know I can't post links to off website.
Wait, there's a link function. That can't be right.

Well regardless, I wanted to make it clear that I basically summarized other people's work, and these are the names of the articles.

Are you serious?

Because I was just trying to troll Inferi when he said no war legends. I don't even watch anime.

Yeah, the Sangheli in particular don't let females in the military.

This is noted in Halo 5, where one of the Spartans, an expert on Sangheli culture, is surprised that the Arbiter has a female Sangheli in his army, indicating that it must be a recent development (Halo 5 takes place five years after the Covenant has dissolved.)

Ah, OK. I'll leave the female Sangheili bit out. But the bio is still there on Word, and I can make a few tweaks to it after some more research.

Oh, wait, so females might have joined military pursuits after the Covenant was dissolved? That gives me another idea, maybe make one that ran away from her tribe and was discovered by a group of travelling mercenaries?

Yup - not to mention, you've thrown out A LOT of anime protagonist tropes. Though blond hair and Green eyes is hardly an "unremarkable" appearance in my books!

I suppose having magic in a magic deficient setting isn’t necessarily a bad thing, especially when you consider the roleplaying roster maxes out at 8 on a good day. With how magic works on this forum, being "the muggle" is just a sure way to get left out.

As for backfiring, I guess I'm kind of influenced by Dragon Ball Z and Naruto where many techniques are double edged swords. Kaioken has the ability to WRECK your body if you aren't in complete control, and if you misuse Rasenshuriken, you're likely going to lose an arm. I kind of respect this kind of magic, as it adds balance by adding a risk factor for the caster (with actual aftereffects during or after the fight).

A "Cast Limit" would be a great way to even the odds between casters and non-casters in most roleplays, and would be an improvment over the current system, I must admit. That said, when was the last time someone actually pvp’d on this forum? And, even if they did, the Roleplayer-Bro-Code honour bounds us to channel our inner Son Goku and let the other character live, regardless of who they are or why they’re being beaten to a pulp in the first place.

I’ll also try to find the post you described!

It worked, too. I was all ready to get annoyed and post something repeating that mandate when I realized "that's not the character, idiot".

But yes, he seems quite similar. I'd list the similarities, but I don't think it really matters.

NOT IN MY WORLDS BITCHES

Not that I'll put anyone in a situation where they're guaranteed to die unless they did something real serious to earn that spot. Anyone dying is because of their own actions, since I'll always leave a way out.
Done in by the dubious doings of destiny.

Sounds like a challenge.

EDIT: As Azi probably knows, I've always wanted to have a character die on this forum. Not as in a Disney death, but an actual death someone on the cast might actually care about. But, anytime a situation gets dangerous, the kiddygloves go on - and death just seems somewhat impossible.

It sounds kind of emo, but deaths are probably the most memorable and emotional parts of any work. The fact they are excluded, I feel, makes actions lack a sense of consequence.

I would have actually killed characters off had any of my threads actually progressed far enough.

I'm not saying they wouldn't have a choice in the matter. It'll be more like you can choose to sacrifice yourself for the greater good, but if you refuse then a crapton of bad things will happen and your character will have to live with that.

I prefer the whole situation of "Hey, we can do this!" which dissolves into a "Oh no, we can't do this and we're fucked" when it comes to characters dying. I mean, that's what I was kinda expecting to happen on ITF when it came to Siera and her rather insane idea to chase after a demigod of chaos on her own.

The problem is having a situation where it's actually reasonable for a character death to happen without dooming the entire case, since a lot of the time it would come from an overwhelming fight of some kind.
