Well, the main difference is in terms of ease-of-use (which affects PCs the least, given that I'm not really planning on mechanical stuff that requires you to do constant maintenance or get screwed over) since you don't need to clean the weapon nearly as much, it's more consistent and accurate, and, yes, they have the ability to generate a lot more power. On average, the weapons aren't that far above the older ones, and someone that is highly skilled with older models will still have an advantage over someone with a newer model.

Most of the models in use by the common soldier are just basic rifles, so the discrepancy doesn't start showing as much until you come into contact with more elite forces.

The state of the newer weaponry isn't as advanced (for the most part) as our weaponry today, though, and given that this is based on a JRPG world, swords and whatnot still have a reasonable amount of power.

Sounds good. I like the idea of a character distrustful of crystal-tech, so instead of working with the latest on the line equipment he collects older guns considered 'obsolete' by modern society.

Works for me. How distrustful, though? I'm asking primarily because the plan is for everyone to start on a airship. As you might imagine, they're new technology, so I would like to make sure he would actually get on the ship in the first place. Done in by the dubious doings of destiny.

Talked into getting aboard by a friend in order to 'conquer your fears' bullshit, even if he isn't scared of crystal tech just doesn't like how everyone in the world relies on it; thus his non-crystal tech lifestyle, because if everyone relies on it then eventually, if it fails, he'll be perfectly fine.

So basically he's kind of like one of those survivor types who prepare for nuclear winter.
