Well, the main difference is in terms of ease-of-use (which affects PCs the least, given that I'm not really planning on mechanical stuff that requires you to do constant maintenance or get screwed over) since you don't need to clean the weapon nearly as much, it's more consistent and accurate, and, yes, they have the ability to generate a lot more power. On average, the weapons aren't
that
far above the older ones, and someone that is highly skilled with older models will still have an advantage over someone with a newer model.
Most of the models in use by the common soldier are just basic rifles, so the discrepancy doesn't start showing as much until you come into contact with more elite forces.
The state of the newer weaponry isn't as advanced (for the most part) as our weaponry today, though, and given that this is based on a JRPG world, swords and whatnot still have a reasonable amount of power.
