OK, I just beat Mass Effect 3! So, it turns out destroying a piece of machinery activates the Crucible, somehow. I was expecting an evil ending, as you sabotage something, but thus, it releases an orange blast, which destroys Reaper-based forces everywhere. The explosion continues, travelling through the mass relays, and so destroying the Reapers once and for all.
I was expecting the Crucible's weapon to destroy Earth. I think that, if you had to sacrifice the entirety of Earth to destroy the Reapers, that would be a much more brutal, dynamic, memorable ending, as it basically puts the Illusive Man as a villain who was right, whose plan would have been for Earth.
I found it rather saddening that Garrus puts the rectangle-thing of Commander Shepard's name on the wall, but I felt this scene would have been better if the user's inputted name was revealed. Seeing the first name and last name would've been more, say, emotional. It seems as though the ending was, well, not rushed, but too quick.
So, after the credits, the trilogy ends with an old man talking to a kid as they gaze at stars. There was one more story of Shepard, according to the storyteller, and then, the game goes back in time or something, to continue the game just before the Illusive Man's base.
Well, I did like the ending, it was not remarkable, but good enough. It seems Shepard is still alive, presumably in the rubble of the Citadel; I was expecting the game to fade out as you look at the N7 dogtag!
So ya, not sure if I reached the “true ending” West, but if I did, well, I certainly found the ending to be OK. If I didn't, well, I think I'm sapped out of energy for any more gaming for a while anyways, so I'll have to leave it at that.
Honestly, I'm just glad I got to experience the Mass Effect trilogy. Goodbye, Kirby Shepard, sorry for not putting any effort to making you happy, and sorry Kaidan, for dissing your date and affection for her, but at least she got laid by Javik (maybe).
