Well, I mean, Yandere's aren't specifically limited to Japanese culture - I've seen a few western films which feature Yandere-like behaviour. The difference is that in Japan, obsessive behaviour over a person can be redemable or even cute when channelled in a non-destructive way. Western films tend to depict such behaviour as dangerously psychotic, with people who exhibit such tendencies to be axe wielding psychopaths who deserve nothing but a bullet between the eyes when they jump off the deep end.
EDIT: So it's likely you've experienced Yandere's before - just not under that name!
