I wasn't expecting to be made the sideshow, I actually stopped posting because I was struggling with writing the character. The attempt at an authentic autistic character fried my brain, or maybe it was just how I was feeling at the time, I'm not entirely sure. I just couldn't keep up what I was trying to do.

Honestly, it isn't that I needed something super flashy (albeit the autist with a deadly power was certainly a concept in my mind), invisibility has just always been one of those powers I consider shit-tier. People seem to love it, and I'm sure it's great for some, I just see far too many ways it can be bypassed or even ignored. Not to mention the lack of power growth around it, even if you do end up including turning other stuff invisible, it just feels weak to me.

There's no doubt the powers were useful, they just don't fall under the category of "we can go toe to toe with some kind of bad guy", so it's like a feeling of "oh, so we can't be the big hero except in a specific set of circumstances that allow us to free the other so they can do the heavy lifting".

In a nutshell, yes.

Creators don't like to admit that even protagonists are also sideshows in other peoples lives.

I guess the problem is that everyone has to be flashy. If it's not flashy, it's not a protagonist. I personally disagree with your assessment that you didn't have protagonist abilities, and I also vehemently object to the fact that you think I was going to make you the sideshow.

That... wasn't quite what I was getting at, though I do think a writer needs some sort of admiration for an ability - flashy or not. After all, how can a character decide what to do with an ability while the creator is still trumped in the initial stages of "my power sucks..."

I actually had a similar rroleplay concept a while back. Mutants with weak powers, but over time they advance from stage 1 through to stage 5, each stage increasing/mutating their powers further to become far greater. I am Inferi.

Initial planning is that it's entirely volluntary. Honestly, in a setting crammed with mutants, it cuts costs on wall repairs when you leave the doors to your facility unlocked.

Honestly though, do we want a school setting? I mean, think about how awkward it would be for a newly powered 40 year old to be sent to class of highschoolers. O_o I'm open to just about any setting BUT a lab. :P

As for me, I'd rather just start them off on the high stage and let them burn themselves out - for example, telepaths in media can rarely block out the voices of other people without practice... driving them nuts.

I don't think magic should be something that requires effort to release; I think it should be something that requires effort not to release ALL of it at once, if you catch my drift. :P

So effectively, everyone has high power but abysmal control, and they're forced to work on that control in order to become stronger/better/safer.

If not a school, lab or government facility... Camp? College? Secluded mansion? Subway system secret safe haven? Big area of a city that is abandoend because of a disastrous event that turned it into ruins leading it into being a ghosttown/good hiding spot for vagrants?

About powers,
I can suggest that powers be based on the various interactions of basic physics. This includes electromagnetism (an electric field and magnetic field, resulting in a vector field that can be controlled), gravitation (the curvature of spacetime, leading to energy and momentum), radioactive decay (results in nuclear fission [particles split into smaller particles and causing radiation]), and the nuclear force (leads to the binding or confinement of protons and neutrons into hadrons, potentially making this a defensive power).

Hypothetically, if such powers could connect to the neurons of a human brain, and be manipulated by one's consciousness, we could utilize these principles into various types of powers that are not limited to anything specific, but allowing a very flexible, open-ended, creative form of powers that gradually become stronger over time.
