So they aren't completely surrounded. Okay, are they positioned in a U shape then, about halfway around the clearing? Are they in a straight line, but slightly spread out? Beneath the gold, the Bitter Steel.

George, she didn't use the exact wording, but it essentially means the same thing. Just replace 'magical ability' with 'powers', 'char history' with 'short character history', and so on. Beneath the gold, the Bitter Steel.
