Hey Inferi, were the subjects being paid to participate in the experiment? How were they selected/informed that they were selected? And do you have any preference in age of characters (e.g. the government selected all ages, but I want a group of 20-somethings)?

Yes, they were. It would be a great deal of compensation, enough to live very comfortably for the rest of your life providing you survived the war.

It was a somewhat secretive selection process (i.e. nobody involved really knows the details) but it was based on psych profiles, personal history, etc. Basically they were looking for people that would adapt well to what they were given, and ones that would be reliable on their side when they were put onto the battlefield.

As for ages, I can't really justify barring anyone, since all ages would have their uses. I'd prefer a cast of higher end teenagers, at the least, since I'd like them to be able to comprehend what's happening in the world. Older isn't bad, but too young wouldn't work wonderfully. Done in by the dubious doings of destiny.
