Silver is supposed to ward off the evil, impure and undead (of which vampires are included). In some portrayals, vampires seem outright phobic of silver or anything else deemed "holy".

To be fair, I'm questioning where the animosity between spiders and vampires came from. You'd think they'd be close as kin considering how spiders consume their prey.
