Suddenly, he charged forward, slashing the knife, as fast as lightning. Before I knew it, my whole torso felt as if it were on fire as month-old wounds reopened. While I was preoccupied with the pain, he loosed all of the shots. All of them met their mark. I crumpled to the ground.
__"Bye bye," he said, chuckling slyly. He closed the door behind him, and left the house. I crawled back to the chair and the game. I needed to recover from the assault. Who was that man? Was he a man?
__My thoughts were interrupted when the power cut out. I heard a loud pop. My mom shouted through the door.
__"Get out! Crawl out your window!" Immediately alert, I shoved open the window and punched out the screen. I ran away from the house. Once I was away from it I saw the inferno.
__The house was ablaze. Horrified, I mustered my energy snd tried to summon a rain storm. None came. I decided to try something smaller, with a small jet of water, rather than a storm. A drop came. Somehow, my powers were not working. I had no chance to ponder why. Instead, I just stood there. My mother, sister, and Eddy quickly reminded me that the house was burning, so I called 911 on my cellular phone.
__The firemen arrived. The entire town arrived at the scene soon thereafter. Following the arrival of the crowd, my mother sent me and my sister to her friend's hotel. I was in shock at the thought of the night's events. The whole evening was a blur. I remember only washing up and going to bed. I did not even ponder the words of Trop Faux.

The following morning, I woke up after a poor night's sleep. I went outside to observe the sunrise. The first sunrise of our new life. I was not too hungry, so I did not eat breakfast. I went to school.
The day was full of sympathy. The news of the tragedy spread quickly. I received many donations for me and my family. Not much occurred. After a long day, I went back to the hotel room.
The following weeks were miserable. As finals ended and school came to a close, the home life was disasterous. My stepfather was ill from smoke exposure and we discovered that he had epillepsy to boot. My sister was emotional and my mother was stressed. It was all I could do to keep the family together. I felt I was going crazy from the effort.
I had to be strong though. I had to be strong enough for the whole family. For two weeks, this endless cycle of sadness, frustration, and stress continued. Everyone was on everyone else's nerves. Finally, on June 30, my sister and I went to our Aunt Patti's house.
After two and half weeks, we went home. Once we did, we found a new house waiting for us. It was large compared to our previous one. It had two floors, and I had my own bathroom and bedroom. Finally, we had space to breathe. After the hotel room, a tent would seem an acceptable living space.
After the summer of recovery, it was time for eleventh grade. The days of woe were over, and I watched the golden sunrise as I waited for the bus on September 7.

Chapter 11
The new school year began as usual. I found all of my classes quite satisfactory. I was glad to see all of my friends again, and they were glad to see me.
One day, in mid september, I was running around the track. When I was in the middle of my second lap, I heard a rustle in the bushes. I dismissed it as some animal or another. A lap later, I heard the noise again. I was perplexed, so I stopped for a moment There was nothing in sight, so I continued.
Suddenly, I heard a loud rustle, and the snapping of branches. I spun around, ready to meet any possible threat, but nothing was there.
__"What's up, Stevers?" my friend, Sara, asked.
__"I thought I heard something," I replied.
__"It was probably a squirrel or something. I wouldn't be too worried."
__"Whatever you say, Sara," I said, unconvinced. I was dumbfounded, but continued running. I finished my five laps without any incident. As we walked back up to the school, I could not shake the feeling that someone or something was watching us, unseen. I could not help but think that it had something to do with the mysterious Trop Faux.
__"I think something's watching us," I said to my friend Ashley Bernath
__"Oh, you're too paranoid Steven," she answered. The invisible pursuer did not make any attemps to do anything. It was just watching and waiting. I entered the locker room, got changed, then went on to Chemistry class.
Throughout the day, I sensed the stalker, silently watching, waiting for the right moment to strike. Then, while my history teacher, Mr. Bonner, was telling us about the Spanish-American War, I sensed that it was time. The stalker was ready. I heard the swish of a knife and quickly ducked. It missed me by a hair's breadth.
__"What are you doing?" my friend, Kevin, asked. I didn't have time to answer as the stalker took another swipe.
__"Dodging, can't talk!"
__"Okaaayyy," he replied. I raised a pillar of earth where I thought the attacker was standing, and made contact with nothing

except Liz's desk.
__"Hey, watch it!" she exclaimed. I didn't reply. I aimed a big chunk of earth at thin air and threw it. I hit nothing. I could not fight that which I could not see. In addition, it made me look insane.
__"Reveal yourself, coward!" I shouted.
__"Calm down Steve Kwon Do," Mr. Bonner said,"There's more important things than Karate practice."
__"I'm not practising!" I shouted as I dodged another invisible slash, "It's invisible! Show yourself, fiend!"
__"Why should I?" a voice asked.
__"Because you are a terrible coward if you do not!"
**"Do I care?"
__"Apparently not!" I aimed a blast of fire in the direction of the voice. Kevin ducked as the flame roared over him. I smelled burnt hair, but I also heard a groan in a voice that was not Kevin's. I knew how to fight the voice. I taunted, "Idyllic fool! You can not hit me!" I readied some lightning.
__"Watch me!" it said. I fired, but heard no sound that led me to believe I hit my target. "You'll have to do a little better than that!" it taunted. I had missed.
**"All of you, out of here, this could get dangerous!" I commanded the class.
__"You think?" Ryan Turnage said. They did not need to be told twice. I felt a whoosh as the knife passed near me again.
__"Where are you!" I had an idea, "Catch me if you can!" I ran into the hallway.
__"So I shall!" I heard running.
I skidded to a halt. I heard the running stop. I quickly generated a spiral of flame, to hit anything in my immediate vicinity.
__"Did it just get warm in here?" the Voice said from above.
__"No way!" I exclaimed.
__"Yes, way!" it responded. I felt a knife in my back. It hurt like Hell's inferno.
__"Aaarghh!" I fell to the ground.
__"This time it is much more potent. I don't think you'll be using your powers for a while," the Voice said. Then I knew. Trop Faux was my assailant, and he was definitely not human. He hit me on the head. I remember the feeling of teleportation, then I blacked out, and knew no more.

Chapter 12: Caras Nwalmon
I woke up, feeling very weak and ill. I was also very sore. I wondered why, but then I remembered everything from track up to the moment of my capture.
__"Faux! I wonder who, or *what* he is!" I said aloud, "Where am I, I wonder?" I gazed at my surroundings for the first time. I was in a small prison cell, scarcely 5 feet across. There was barely enough room for me to move around. There were cells on either side of me, one of which was occupied. Down the hall, i saw the torture chamber. It looked ghastly; filled with instruments that I cannot bring myself to describe. Let us just say that it was not for the faint of heart.
I examined my own cell. The walls were stained in many different colors, and I wondered what the stains were. Some of the stains were gold, and I shuddered as I realised that they were probably my own blood, spattered from countless beatings and torments over the course of my incarceration. How long I had been there, I did not know.
On the floor, there was a piece of fabric. I suppose it was my bed, if I were permitted to lay down. For I had just realised that I was shackled to the wall in an upright standing position, with no support, save the chains themselves. I struggled with the shackles at my hands and feet, but they only seemed to grow stronger and tighter.
__"Don't bother," a voice said from my right. It came from a young man two cells to my right, shackled in the same manner as me. He looked very strong despite the starvation prisoners were put through. I did not doubt that he was a great warrior of high esteem, held for some good deed he performed. The man continued grimly, "They'll only tighten until your hands and feet are severed." I stopped struggling.
__"Where am I?" I asked the man, "and who are you?"
__"I am called Jephazar," he replied, "and you would not want to hear your location. It would only crush your spirits."
__"Since I am here, it would be best if I knew where I am located."

__"Before I enlighten you, tell me your name."
__"My name is Guthix."
__" Now, Guthix. If you simply must know, you are in Caras Nwalmon, the Tormented City. It is the worst prison in Freneskae, and that is a terrible thing to be known for. 'Tis the worst location in the universe."
__"What is Freneskae?"
__"This world is Freneskae. 'Tis most terrible, most terrible indeed. The land is barren, scarred by eons of endless war. There are few resources to be had, and what little there is, is always fought over by the races of this world. The air is dangerous, full of toxins and fell sorcery. The sky is dark and the rivers are filled with the blood of legions of fallen warriors. Bones litter the ground, and the soil is made of ash. Enchantments and curses plague what civilisations manage to survive the bloodshed and destruction, mainly the Mahjarrat and the Dragonkin.
__"The prisons are much more fell. Curses and enchantments are frequently built into their structures, that all prisoners experience pain and suffering, as long as they live there. Torments and terror await the unfortunate souls locked inside. The guards are cruel, and frequently beat and torture prisoners. Escape is almost impossible, with the most vile and terrible curses and torments that the guards can provide. There are many guards, and all of them are merciless. If you manage to escape, chances are that you will have been cursed. If you manage to survive *that*, you have to find a way to escape Freneskae, or somehow survive here.
__"In addition, prisoners are forced to take part in Prison Duels, and try to defeat every fell creature or powerful warrior that made their way into the prisons. If you win, you are forced to devour every one of your fallen quarries. There are beasts as well, which the Mahjarrat or Dragonkin release to kill the prisoners, all for entertainment.

__"This prison, Caras Nwalmon, is the worst. Caras Nwalmon is a Mahjarrat prison, and it is the worst prison in Freneskae. It has all of the same characteristics of the other prisons, multiplied hundredfold. The guards are the most fell Mahjarrat in Freneskae, tormenting prisoners with words filled with malice and black leechcraft. Here, prisoners are starved and beaten much more than in the other prisons. This place is terrible," he finished. The situation was grave indeed.
__"So, you are a veteran?" I asked.
__" Yes. I have never lost a Prison Duel. However, I am scarred, for they forced me to devour my comrade, and best friend. I would willingly die if not for the fact that, if I die, the Mahjarrat will use my bones to conjure a terrible warrior of darkness with no will, nor conscience, forced to serve forever as a tormented member of their legions. I would do anything to stave off such a thing. I would not want my bones to be used for evil. I would want to rest in peace," he responded.
__"That is a terrible fate indeed. Is there no way to avoid it?"
__"Have you not just heard what I said? The *average* prison here is inescapeable, and this is Caras Nwalmon."
__"But we simply *must* escape!"
__"Indeed we must. I would hate duelling you. Your are the only kind soul I have seen in a while. How shall we escape though?"
__"I know not, but-"
__"Hey, maggots! Stop chittering like insects, before I come over there and silence you forevermore!" shouted a guard in a fell voice, full of malice and black sorcery. I had a feeling that, if he chose to do so, he could torment us with black speech and terrible magicks. We fell silent. It was folly to discuss escape at that time.

A few days passed. The daily cycle of beatings, torments, and insults continued. Jephazar and I were given one meal of a half slice of bread and a half bowl of water per day, as punishment for our talking. There came a time when the guards had left to bring in a new prisoner. We discussed escape.
__"So, what is our plan of action Guthix?" Jephazar asked.
__"I think I have come up with a plan, but first you must tell me more about the Mahjarrat."
__"The Mahjarrat thrive on war and evil. Kindness, mercy, and conscience are all weaknesses to them, and all those who express those traits are promptly exiled, killed, or imprisoned," he replied, "They are powerful magi and strong warriors. They are formidable foes by all accounts. Even the weakest Mahjarrat are to be reckoned with.
__"They are wielders of powerful and dangerous magicks. They can shapeshift, generate illusions, and summon undead hordes from the remains of the fallen, lost in battles during ages long past. The Mahjarrat are quick to anger and swift in their retribution. They are mortal, but use fell magicks to live insurmountably long lives, transcending ages. One can not easily stand against the Mahjarrat."
__"I am an incredibly powerful being myself. I think I could take one on in a battle of wills and sorcery. I shall do so, and that is how we shall escape. We shall commence the plan tomorrow."

Chapter 13: The Dungeon
In the deepest dungeon of Caras Nwalmon:
Kraalbazaar whipped the Dragonkin mercilessly, then slashed it with its own dagger- the wicked knife with its pitch black metal and its barbed blade. The dagger was enchanted so that, with the correct incantation and circumstances, the knife could instantly take the life away from the next thing it pierces- even immortals.
The White Wyrm poison was potent enough, and could temporarily sap its target of power, but it could not kill immortals- not without the incantation. That was why he was torturing the Dragonkin. Only it knew how to work the knife, and Kraalbazaar needed that knife to work, no matter what it would take.

Chapter 14: Escape from the Tormented City
The following day, I went over the plan in my head. I was to taunt a guard to get him to come to my cell. Then, I was to engage him in a magical duel, enchanting him with words alone.
__"Hey you! You are an Idyllic fool of a being! You are an abomination and an insult to al life! A curse upon your race!"
__"What was that, maggot? I'll torment you until you beg for death. A favor which I won't grant!"
__"Did you just say that you would torment me? Ha! A good jest! You could not torment an insect!" I taunted.
__"You're andodulin!"
__"Do your worst!"
__"Caela ie'lle!" he shouted. That means "Hit me with your best shot."
__"Lova handasse! Tyara harwar!" I shouted a pain hex and a balance curse on him. He staggered, and grimaced in agony.
__"Quanta yassen '*shapsa!" he barked. I felt a twinge. I had been poisoned.
__"Pelekta yassen I' handele!" I shouted. The guard staggered as my mind scramble curse did its job. It was time to close in as he struggled to gather his wits. I followed up with a poisoning hex. I was prevailing. I shouted, "Bagollach en' templa!" an explosion occurred next to the guard, knocking him unconscious. He would not be awakened for a while. "Panta tengwa," I said. My shackles clicked open. I blew out the cell door, then went to Jephazar's cell.
Suddenly, I heard running. More guards were coming! I had to act fast. I broke Jephazar's cell open, then destroyed his shackles.
__"Hurry! More guards are coming, posthaste!" I urged him, "Run!" We ran down the hall. The guards were gaining on us. They shot fireballs at us, and I turned around to face them. There were about five guards, all Mahjarrat. There was no way Jephazar and I could take them alone. We turned and ran as fast as we could. The fireballs were roaring behind us. I felt one go over my head. I quickly turned around and summoned my might. I brought the passage down behing us, but one guard got through!
